• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Just got back from visiting a local contest. Not my first contest, or even near it mind you, but my first as a cooker/contestant wannabe. Probably 50 or 60 teams. Every cooker you can imagine. Lots of Good ones (made not far from here in KS) Lots of bigger trailer mounts. Tons of WSM's and Kettles. One Bandera. Well you'll never guess what team I decided I was gonna strike up a conversation with and try to learn a little somethin'. Hell yes the team with the 'dera. After asking across the table, "whatcha gonna cook in the Bandera?" we started a chat that lasted about 90 mins. Turns out Dave's 'dera has no mods. I described how my queer is set up and suddenly I was the one getting my brain picked. Told him about the site and all the help I've gotten here. He fetched a pad and pen from the camper and I think he'll probably be paying the Brothers a visit real soon. I had a ball. I'm just as chatty in person as I am here on the board and I've never met a stranger. Can't wait for the next opportunity to vistit an event and talk Q.

did you show him your "E"
no

Did the term queer come up yes, but it referred to my brinkmann.

Turns out he lives about 15 mins north of us and his OL used to work where Jeanne does and the two of them chatted while Dave and I talked Q and cookers. He's the brisket guy on his team so I really quizzed him. He showed me the biggest brisket flat I have ever seen. The flat they're gonna cook looked to be at least 10#. I looked like a 12 or 14# packer but it was a trimmed flat.
I told him of my competition ambition and he seconded your advice to part with the 35 bucks and join the KCBS. Also said if I wanted to compete next year to do some judging this year so I'd know exactly what I'd need to turn in next year.

I wonder if it's one of the same guys I saw at Blue Springs last year? The team was kinda young and seemed more interested in the libations than cooking, first impression, but were friendly to talk to. This would have been before my dera purchase, so I would have had nothing to share with him.

Off topic just a little: I ran into a guy at Home Depot that had purchased the charbroil version of the dera. He was looking for a cover. I asked him how he liked it, it said it didn't cook worth a damn. I proceeded to tell him about this site, gave him the URL, and then started telling him about the mods. He didn't find a cover, but before he left, he had stainless for a heat shield and baffle, and expanded metal for a fire grate, and all the information I could think of to share. I don't know if he ever visited the site or not, but I sure did my best to get him on the right track.
