Going to pick up some restaurant equipment in Columbus Ohio. Where should I go and get some good BBQ?

I used to drive from NY to Columbus, OH quite often to visit my in-laws before they moved back to NY.

I ate at three BBQ joints that I don't recall the names probably because they were all mediorce...not bad.. just average..

During my last visit, a neighor of theirs mentioned to me a place called City Barbeque in Columbus as being his favorite.. I just found the website and appears the owners are KCBS judges and won brisket at the American Royal Open one time. http://www.citybarbeque.com/
It might be good, average or downright sucks... I'm not sure but I never found anything else worth going back for a second time.

When I'm in Columbus though, I'd much rather spend all my time eating at one of the Graeter's Ice Cream Parlors (original is in Cincy but other locations in Columbus)... Don't miss out on this... Sample a few flavors but my vote hands down is for the Black Raspberry Chip... It's incredible... I get a few pints mailed to me each year because it's so good.

A lot of people mistake City BBQ as good Q. Only if you haven't eaten anything in about 2 weeks. My personal favorite being a native is Pig Iron Grill. Their Pig Iron Press sandwich is really good. If you are going to Best Restaurant or to Wasserstrom it's easy to get to.

And Graeter's is right up the street from it.

Need directions or get lost give me a call

I have eaten at Smackies and I thought is was decent. He actually competed in Nelsonville at the state championship a couple of years ago. Can't remember how he did.

I ate at the old location though and just haven't made it back since they moved.

Have you ever eaten there Bob? What did you think?

Where is Pig Iron Grill, Bob?

Never eaten at City BBQ and the only other ones I know of are Hoggy's and Smokey Bones and I wouldn't waste my time and money with those two.

A prep/sandwich cooler and a stand up hot box/warmer. Best deals I found were @ Restaurant Equippers in Columbus. Me and my dad are leaving now to go and get them. Thanks for the info everyone.

Hey Deni, just an FYI, the neighborhood around Restraunt Equippers isn't that nice of a place to be so stick to Broad St. or close to it and keep your doors locked.

Oh yeah, go up to the 2nd floor. They have all sorts of used equipment up there. Good deals.

There is also a place called Spaghetti Wharehouse just down the street from there. The food is ok but the atmosphere is great. They have all sorts of old memorabilia and there is even a real train caboose you can eat in. It's right by the tailroad tressel that goes over Broad St. The parking is behind the building.

Bob, I'd argue that some of city bbq is good que, just not all of it, as with most midwest bbq joints. The brisket isn't bad... the pork is so so, the ribs are nothing worth trying. But I like the turkey and brisket pretty well, for a midwest restaurant.

I can't argue with that. I had to use City last Saturday when I misjudged cook times in my new girl and had to fill in some of the food from City. It was good enough for that. Once you've had some good stuff at Pig Iron you'll realize for a restaurant City isn't there.

I had smackie's at the new location since it's really close to my house and I wasn't that thrilled. But I'm picky about good food. I'd go hungry before I ate something subpar.

That's what I get for putting her to work before I had a chance to learn all her little nuances. Like trying to kiss a girl on your first date before she's ready. Time and patience get you everything.

They are coming from Detroit Z. What they'll see in CMH is nothing with what they've probably seen there.

You must go hungry quite a bit Bob!!

I do. I keep a vitamin shake mix to tide me over so in the event of unavailable good food I have something.

That being said there's nothing better than a good bowl of Tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich with some Arnold Palmer. So it just depends I guess. Simple food for a simple man, it had just better taste good.

Well I'm back. I spent about 5 g's on restaurant equipment, all brand new. Columbus is a really nice city, I am impressed. I always thought Ohio was nothing but farmland and all the city's looked like Toledo and the best thing was Cedar Pointe. We took I-75 to 23 and took that all the way down. It took us about 3 1/2 hours. All the way down I was looking for any sign of bbq. I was getting worried. I almost gave up hope then we saw the pig iron grill. I almost caused a accident pulling in there I was so excited. I had the pig iron pressed brisket and my dad had a half slab baby back ribs w/ beans, fries and cornbread. The meal was pretty good, I liked the pieces of garlic in the carolina style hot sauce and the brisket was tender. We left there and headed down town right throu OSU's campus. Very nice totally not expecting it to be that nice. After leaving Restaurant Equippers I saw the Spaghetti Warehouse but this trip was about 'que. I asked the salesman about bbq and he told me about a microbrewery bbq place called Barley's Smokehouse so we went. It was smoked wing night, man those wings were the best I've had in a long time. The scottish ale was pretty good too. The salsman also drew us a map to get to City BBQ from Barley's Smokehouse. I was thinking why not we came this far right. So we started driving. We went along the Scotio river Very scenic I was totally impressed. We pulled into City BBQ. The set-up was cool. The bbq was pretty good. brisket was tender the turkey was O.K. a little on the dry side though. I only spent a couple of hours in Columbus but I hit 3 bbq places which were all pretty good. The one thing I did learn was people from Columbus have a funny accent. Thanks for all the info guys.

Not to get into the age old fight, but Ohio Stadium is just much nicer than Michigan's, too. It's not the most gorgeous campus overall (it's too huge for that), but it's nicer than you'd expect...

Glad you got some good food while you were down this way... make sure your restaurant address is in your profile; I head up to the state up north now and then!

Is Restaurant Equippers the supply house on Wilson Rd? The one that you have to have a restaurant license to go into? I have been looking for a supply house for regular joes like me to get restaurant quality equipment.

Oh and I agree that City BBQ is ok once ina while. The pulled pork is mostly dry though. They are mentioned in Steve Teichlens BBQUSA book.

Smokey bones used to be pretty good when they first came to town. I think they are a KC style place and that is where their roots are. Hoggy's is pretty good. Haven't tried Pig Iron Grill. Need to find it and give it a shot.

Restaurant Equippers is open to the public. They are on West Broad street. I think you are thinking of Restaurant Depot? Maybe?

They must be pretty close to each other then. Wilson crosses West Broad St. I will have to look up Equippers.

Glad to hear you found everything ok. Barley's Smokehouse is more about the beer than the food, but it's not bad that's for sure. The OSU campus has changed a lot. I don't get down there nearly as often as I used to but it's really nice now.
