Cooked for Church Homecoming today. Cooked a fresh ham, boneless pork loin and Boston butts. Chopped and mixed with vinegar based sauce. Also cooked pot of stew. Still love the Shirley I was fortunate to buy from brethren member, cooks amazing food and very fuel efficient. Always cooked old school whole hog BBQ on pit using coals from a burn barrel but the Shirley has changed all that.

Looks great, man! That Shirley (with your guidance) can sure put out some nice looking grub!

Looks good mate, what is a Church Homecoming ?

It's just like a family reunion where members, former members that have moved away return and share a meal together. Also many times the Sunday morning service is followed by a covered dish meal with the church members prepare a variety of vegetables, salads and special desserts for all to share. The South is referred to as the Bible Belt and is also the BBQ belt being the birth place of BBQ as we know it. I'm 66 years old and as far back as I can remember my family has cooked BBQ for our church homecoming as well as other churches in our area. Sadly as the members die out in small rural churches today's generation doesn't support or appreciate this tradition. Family reunions and church homecomings were and still is an important part of our Southern culture and heritage for many. As a side note my family has it's annual reunion on the fourth Sunday in August each year and based on my 92 year old father it has been celebrated consecutively since 1927. There's a saying in the south "American by birth Southern by the Grace of God" and family reunions and church homecomings are part of our southern culture

Thank you, tradition is awesome

I too am 66 and those covered dish home coming meals are just beyond belief. It seems all the members bring their best.

Your contribution to the homecoming looked excellent. Although I know for a fact you had some stiff competition from the church ladies. I've been to many around the Winston-Salem area. Those Babtist church ladies can put on a spread like nobody's business.

Ain't nothing like a good church homecoming... Yes it is a southern tradition... Lots of them around here lately... In fact we were invited to one today... But could not get home soon enough from the gulf coast.... Great looking grub!!!!

Called "dinner on the ground" and you knew who's food to go for and who's to avoid. Went to family reunion in Pine Mountain, GA last summer with approximately 200 family members in attendance which is justice a fraction of my family. We had members from 16 states and 3 countries there but most from around West Central GA.

When I was growing up in the rural south I didn't appreciate traditions like these. I couldn't wait to move away and leave behind so much of what I considered not as good as the 'modern' urban life I saw on TV and in movies. Took me a while to understand how great the food was and how important traditions like these to build a real community. Now I'm back to cooking barbecue and still trying to recreate my grandma's biscuits, chicken and dumplings and pies - sure wish I could go back into her kitchen and cook with her.
