Hi All,

I was wondering if any of you knew of a good place to purchase a charcoal basket for Brinkmann SnP. I've seen people make thier own, but now sure I'm handy enough to do that.

Thanks

Go to Home Depot or Lowes and purchase sheet of expanded metal.
It is easy to bend or fold over the edge of a work bench or tool box.
Fold 4 sides up and bend, inter -lock corners together or tie with wire.
Easy. No welding necessary.

What Jon said. HD and Lowes, etc sell the lighter weight expanded metal which is pretty easy to cut and bend. A saber saw/jig saw is the most technical tool needed. I made a real simple charcoal basket for my Silver Smoker and two baskets for the drum smokers. One of the drum baskets was made with the extra heavy expando which was a real challenge for a non-metal worker such as me. But I persevered and was victorious! Hey Rocky, as we are almost neighbors maybe we could get together and have a metal bending/cutting party paired up with a cook session. Let me know what you think.

Not sure of dimensions you're looking for but maybe you can use this model and change to fit your cooker.

I have been wanting to make one as well, what is better, the ones made of all expanded metal or the ones with a maze through them?

Can you tell me where you got the mesh? I couldn't find any at HD or Lowes.

Thanks!

Edit: Nevermind. I just realized that's what "expanded metal" was. Duh!!!

I didn't find it at Lowes but I did find it at HD.
I'm pretty sure I found it at a place where they had metal stock ..not rebar. Ask if you don't see it. This is what it looked like when I bought it.

Sure looks like that box it's sitting in was welded!!!

Thinner guage stuff can be easily cut with a solid pair of tin snips. Heavier guage stuff any kind of rotating blade cutter, dremel with metal wheel, angle grinder, compound miter saw, table saw, hacksaw. Anything intended for metal.

I don't weld or anything so this what I did.

Twister, what are you smoking your party that makes it necessary to have the larger basket? Doesn't the ash choke up the fire? Maybe you're just using it so it doesn't fall over the sides so easily. I have a party too and haven't needed to add more charcoal than what I could fit in it already thats why I was asking. Thanks.

I was going to make the sides a bit shorter but paid for the mesh and it didn't hurt anything to keep it that high. I wish they had better info in regards to the commercial tray on the Backwoods website. Anyway, I find the stock basket good for 5 to 7 hours but no longer. I fill the basket to the top, what I don't use, is snuffed out and I use it for the next cook. I use lump (wicket good) and there is very little ash. If I used Kingsford it would fill the tray and kill the fire no problem.

What kind of cook times are you getting with the higher walls?

I've got 15 hours without filling it. The fire was still going the but food was done. That gave me a 1 to 2 inch layer of coals left.

I found something nice @ HD yesterday. An aluminum mesh gutter guard. It measured about 8" x 36" and worked perfectly last night.

I have a small basket. Don't make fun. Size doesn't matter :)

It's was only $2.19.

It didn't yet. :)

Last night I grilled some steaks with a full chimney of charcoal in it.

Before yesterday, I was using a wall of folded aluminum foil around the basket to increase capacity. Whilst it worked great, I wanted something with more airflow. I always had a feeling I was creating a jet engine with the wall of foil.

BTW: The melting point of Al is 660.32 °C or 1220.58 °F
