• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Well..... I just completed my charcoal basket, now the question is........do you other char-griller owners keep the basket on the SFB cooking grate or down lower on the charcoal grate of the SFB?? The one I made fits both spots but I have CRS disease (can't remember chit) and I cant remember where you all say you sit it....I just seasoned my char-griller today and sat it on the charcoal grate down low. Seemed to work Ok but wondering if the cooking grate is better. Thanks guys

I have not gotten around to making a basket yet, but when I do, I am going to make it so it not sitting on the slide out drawer so I can remove ash while the fire is still burning. Sort of like a wood burning stove.

just my opinion.

mkatts I was also thinking that too! I do have to say though that after 5 hours I accumulated very little ash and there was no need to dump. I used the HD rancher charcoal and was pretty happy with it. Anyway the upper grate for cooking in the SFB must be the better choice for placement of the basket for that reason.

i took both grates out, and layed in angle iron placed just above the ash pan. the basket sits on that. if i need to dump the pan, i can remove it while keeping the basket in.

Just set it on the grate in the firebox......give it a shake every now and then and the drawer makes getting rid of the ash very easy:biggrin:

no problem, the first time i did this i used angle iron that was too soft and it bent, so make sure that what you use is sturdy enough but flexible enough for you to cut it. I beleive my pieces are about 13 inches. just use a tape measure and figure out the distance between both sides

My basket is supported in the SFB just as motley que's is. Ash drawer can be removed if necessary without disturbing the basket.

Here's a closer view of my charcoal basket and angle iron pieces for its support:
