Just bought my first butt of the season, I had to order it a week in advance. 9lb 7oz. $29.96. At least I finally found a butcher that knew what a Boston Butt is. I also have to order brisket a week in advance. Welcome to Cannuckistan.

Can you say OUCH!
What's the exchange rate now?, don't think its that big a difference to still keep that from being expensive. Don't you have no pigs up there?, that brisket is gonna cost you the price of a new car!!

My local butcher here in Niagara Falls has butt on sale for $1.98.
I just bought a 9lbs butt over at Wegman's in Buffalo for $11.61 (USD).
Right now the exchange rate is hovering around PAR.

The Canadian dollar is actually worth more than the US dollar right now. Last summer I was paying about $36.00 for a nice sized packer.

That butcher is making a nice dollar from the sale of whole butts. Does he make sausage? He's probably buying butts by the case anyway, butts are not a specialty cut!

OUCH!

The carniceria (mexican meat market) here sells butts for $1.50/lb everyday. The "sale" price at most grocery stores is $.99/lb. I wish shipping was cheaper, I'd send them to you.

I've got 100lbs of "bone in" butt that I paid $.99/lb for. I was hard up for some butt for a chuirch cook and I paid a butcher $55 for a really nice 14lber and 2lbs of ground pork. I swore I'd never get raped like that again so I stock pile it when its on sale.

I go to Timmins every week, North bay as well, no grocery stores stock butts or brisket. I have a couple butcher shops that I check also, The first time I tried to buy briskets, the butcher had a puzzled look on his face, had no idea what I was talking about. When I explained to him where the brisket came from, he went to the cooler and got me a 1lb corned beef brisket.I told him it was the right cut of meat but wrong style and way too small. He shrugged it off and said they never get them the way I want.

man that's a lot for just one..I've been getting two for less than that from RD..right around $1.05 per pound

Expatpig,

My grandparents live in North Bay and my Uncle has an island cottage on Trout Lake.

I promised I would 'try' to get up there this summer for a visit.
If I do, I will let you know ahead of time and if you want try to pack a bunch of butts up for you (even some briskets) and you could meet me there.

Hey EXPATPIG. I got mine from Royal Candian Super store and payed $0.89 a Lbs. They where on sale a couple months ago so I stocked up for the season. Brisket I'm only paying$3.00 a lbs. Find A deffierent butcher

Find a different butcher? lol Do you see where Cochrane is on the map? We only have one Grocery store. No "real" butcher shop. The grocery only orders, and repackages meat. The nearest butcher is 1.5 hrs away.

Drive to the big City and find a new Butcher then go to the appliance store and get a Really big freezer then head home and it will make the trip worth it

I picked up a 15.5# packer brisket a week ago yesterday for $2.59 a pound.
Thats considered a bargain here.
The new brisket flats they had were priced at $4.99#.
The butchers couldn't explain why the huge price increase, the were bewildered themselves.

i just googled Chocrane...you're way up there! Sorry prices are so high and some things are unavailable...goes with the territory? Road trip to the states maybe??

Briskets and butts are a craps shoot at Cdn grocery stores. I look all the time (I live near Toronto) and the best price I have found on butts was a sale at 2lbs for the price of 1 at $2.99/lb.

After a lot of searching, I refuse to pay $3/lb for butts, but realize that there is little chance of finding butts for anything other than $2 - $2.50 per lb. In northern Ontario, the price will be a bit higher.

Brisket can be depressing. The only place that consistently carries packers (Wholefoods) wants $7/lb (that's right, that is not a typo). You can find flats typically for $4-$5 per lb.

As far as grocery stores go, Metro has recently been making greater entry into the Ontario market, and has had the best prices on the large cuts of meat, with frequent sales on butts. If there is a Metro near you, start there.

Nearest Metro is in Timmins, formerly A&P, they are also meat repackagers that are not particularly interested in special ordering cuts of meat. My local Valumart will order for me , but at a premium price. The best thing that I can hope for is that more people want briskets and butts and that they would begin to stock them. I can order a box of three packers and have them in a week,@ $7 plus /lb.
