Quick question, I've read different things so now I am confused.

I have another 55 gallon drum that was given to me. This drum contained corn oil in it. No liner, just oil. I am planning on burning it out this week. How long do I need to burn it for? Wait till it rusts and then sand it down?

Thanks for the advice!

I'd say a good, hot burn with fresh wood added for a couple hours, let it go to ash, cool completely, and check it out with a wire brush. My non-lined drum was in pretty good shape after a burn like that, and the grinding went pretty quick.

Just burn it until the paint comes off the outside. Also, try this: Peek outside to check on your burn, and then say in a very calm voice,"Oh ****. Honey can you grab the fire extinguisher?" I swear it's funny , if only to you.

My drum had motor oil in it, I washed it out at the car wash, tripple washed with dish soap, burned a charcoal fire in it, all valves open so it was over 300 degrees, rinsed out and wiped with cooking oil, good to go.

Now thats classic!

I thought a burnout was meant if you have liner in it...
My yellow drums had palmoil in it,no liner,I didn't do a burnout,I wirebrushed the inside till shiny bare metal and seasoned it.
Wirebrushing wasn't even necessary.

Necessary? Probably not. Recommended? I'd say so as it's part of the fun. It makes the meat taste better knowing all of the work you went through to make it!

No liner? I wouldn't burn it, not after corn oil. Hell, it's half way seasoned already. Fill your charcoal basket, add some wood chunks, and let it smoke till it gets a black coating in there. Then add some meat!

This made me laugh, I shared it with my wife and she said "I hope he likes pain" - I'd do it.

when I read the title of this thread I heard the song by the Talking heads Burning down the house so when you hear that song you can now sing "burning out the drum" Our house is what you waiting
cool baby things like that are changing
burning out the drum

I have a reconditioned unlined drum. Is there any need to burn it out? I can't do it at my house but could take it to a friends if I really should.

My drum didn't have a liner, came with veggie oil in it. I just washed it down with the hose and started cooking on it. The burn out is for two things, 1. to burn out the liner if you have one and 2. give some guys an excuse to light a really big fire. I say wash it out, coat it with Pam if you feel adventurous, and let'er rip.
