Please forgive me as I am new to this site... I am looking to modify my fire box to make it more effective and efficient. I have already made the baffle, and I am in the process of making a charcoal basket, but I have been unable to find a diagram or description of how to set fire bricks in conjunction with the ashpan and basket. If you place the bricks on the bottom of the box, will this eventually trap moisture and lead to rust? I would like to do this right as it will be a long time before I will be able to purchase another smoker!!

Will it trap moisture. No. But that dont mean yo want to leve the beast in the rain. Keep the bottom of the firebox clean and the pit covered(tarp) when storing and it will be fine. The biggest culprit of rotting the pit is the Lye in the ashes from charcoal and wood, especially if it gets wet. So dont leave ashes in there for weeks and you'll be ok.
