NYTimes article today this is a big deal in NY. http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/08/dining/08domino.html?ref=dining

I love the quote form Marty Markowitz Brooklyn borough president;

“It’s a multinational right-wing company, mass marketing the Brooklyn attitude with obsolete ethnic stereotypes, not to mention flimsy crusts,” he said through a spokesman.
Mr. Markowitz has yet to taste the Domino’s pizza. But that didn’t stop him from offering an opinion: “To our sophisticated palates, Domino’s is about as Brooklyn as Sara Lee Cheesecake is Junior’s.”

I would be pretty pissed off if I owned one of the 50+ Domino's in Brooklyn. Markowitz used to come into a very well known high end restaurant that I ran in Brooklyn and would make the chef make him a hamburger (and would make a big deal about how he didn't eat anything on the menu). Not sure how sophisticated that is.

"We purchased our Domino’s pie just a few blocks away from Totonno’s on Neptune Avenue. That it was handed to us over bulletproof glass turned out to be the most authentically Brooklyn part about it."

Anyone who lives in Brooklyn and walks into a Domino's Pizza should be deported BACK to a 3rd world country.

But again, there are over 50 of them in Brooklyn, someone is buying the pizza.

Who the FARK is this author? Probably some trust fund chick from CT.

Marty Markowitz, the Borough President said this about Dominos..
“It’s a multinational right-wing company, mass marketing the Brooklyn attitude with obsolete ethnic stereotypes, not to mention flimsy crusts,” he said through a spokesman.

I have two new sworn enemies! Kim Severson and Dominos! Both must die.

What restaurant? And have you tried Domino's "Brooklyn-style" toppings and pizzas? I did just recently. It's about as close to brooklyn pizza as the McRib is to Mike Mill's babybacks.

Don't forget that Marty keeps kosher - at least a version of it that lets him eat in as many Brooklyn restaurants as possible. At Grillin On the Bay he wanted to try everything except the pork. Maybe it was just your place

Another thing about the piece that I thought was amusing was the quote from Arthur Schwartz, Italian food authority and former radio host. He was a consultant to Domino's last year and suggested using cornmeal in the crust. He didn't know what Domino's was planning. "If I caused this," he said, "I apologize."

I wonder how Arthur feels about BBQ....

You are missing the point Rob. To say you have a sophisticated palate and then to order a burger at a restaurant that is famous for its food (and its Chefs). Would you go to Patsy's and order fried rice? Anyway he isn't a food critic and probably should bad mouth the food of the business owners that pay his salary. As I said I would be really pissed if I owned a Domino's in Brooklyn.

Marty's a politician W&S. The burger was probably the equivilant of accepting a drink of water when someone you're visting offers you something to drink when you really don't want anything. Who knows why he wouldn't eat more at your place. I'm sure he had his reasons.

And as a politican, Marty seems to be against the big chains from coming to Brooklyn. He'll get a lot more play bad mouthing Dominos then he would praising them. We don't like chains here.

50 stores - that's small change. In the four block radius from my home there's 3 Pizzarias - all indepently owned. According to a Google search there's 38,464 pizza places in Brooklyn. So which audience shoud he play to?

Don't forget to ask for your pizza to be cut into squares, and not triangles.

Triangles are the devil's pizza

;)

"So which audience should he play to?"

Thats the problem with 99.99% of politicians.....They PANDER to get votes, instead of sticking to their moral convictions.

Sorry - Dominos can't leave the bullet proof booth. It's Brooklyn don't you know.

I didn't see room in your office to eat at your desk, Smoker.....Especially with all that charcoal laying around.

I really like Marty, and think he's been great for Brooklyn. The fact that I've known him my entire life notwithstanding, I think the wine tastings he holds in Prospect Park reflect a 'sophisticated' palate and a love for his borough.

Fark dominos.

Rob, once again you are missing the point. When you beg the owner to come to a restatuant (with a group of 8) and insist it be taken care of (in not so many words), show up late, etc. and then refuse to order anything of the 4 star menu and instead insult the chef by asking for a burger because "I do not like anything else on the menu" loud enough for every other person in the to d.r. to hear the comment. Besides does Bloomberg do food reviews or did I miss those? I am sure the Domino's pizza sucks but that really isn't the point now is it. And again you can not eat Kosher food in a non-kosher restaurant or event.

Fark dominos.

What about the poor guy that probably owns a franchise that just had his product trashed, by someone that is apparently respected and carries some influence? You know, the same guy that hasn't even tasted the product he trashed? I bet the franchisee is feeling real good about business right about now.

And for the million + the are in for they should be, Domino's franchises aren't cheap.

Sounds like you're a little bitter, man. I'm not saying it's not justified. I guess you were insulted by his comment that he didn't like anything on the menu.

I don't know why he and his group of friends chose your place. I don't know even if it was Marty's choice. I don't even know Marty except for one hug he gave me (That's another story all together. Romero was soo jealous)

But living in NY, you have to learn to respect other people's food limitations. The menu at your place isn't anywhere near Kosher. And to many jews - even if they don't keep strict Kosher - they still follow the prohibitions on pork and shell fish, which is in just about every thing on your menu.

Should Marty have said Dominos sucks - Yeah if that's what he believes. Hell, I haven't tried their Brooklyn style pizza either, but the comments from friends and family when the ad was on tv was a unanimous - bet that sucks and WTF is Brooklyn style pizza?

The only use for Dominos around here is that 3am pie when you're drunk off your ass. Marty was just reflecting a simple truth.
