• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I have read tons and tons on the ECB. I own the 80$ gourmet charcoal smoker. Ill post a pic. Here is what i would like to do. My coal pan consists of two pans. the outer base and the inner pan. The outer pan has one 1 inch hole in the bottom. The inner pan has several luvers in the bottom and holes at the top. I am just curious if i can do a BDS mod to it. remove the inner coal pan and install coal rack inside the outer pan. Then i would have 2 or 3 x 3/4 inch holes in the outer pan for air intakes and use magnets or plugs to adjust flow. My coal pan can only handle one chimney of fuel at a time. With the extra air, will i need to cut the chimney to half and place the bottom portion of pan with unlit charcoal and try to do a minion burn?

Are these good mods to do?

thanx guys for all the help

Matt

I started out with an ECB and did most of the mods to it... problem is you still have an ecb with the fuel and air issues... honestly... start working towards a drum smoker of some sort. You will be asking yourself why you waited that long... I know, I went through 2 1/2 ECB's before I finally did it... I even used the ECB to make my charcoal basket for the drum... Go for it, you will never regret it

yeah i am making a drum smoker as we speak. i just have the ECB now as a second cooker and i figured i would somehow make it work better. If possible. hahaha if you mean what i know.

thanx

If you could resolve the leaking lid and regulate the bottom intake or cover it and drill holes in the side it may work good. How would you seal the base if you remove the charcoal pan? You could mod the stock pan some how I guess. I'm not sure it would be worth all the fuss. The bottom pan is also very prone to rusting and burning thru from my ECB experience. I just built my drum and doubt my ECB will get much if any use as a smoker anymore.

Work on perfecting the Minion method. You'll increase your cook times a bit.

You can make some Q on those things, but they do require more work because they aren't very efficient.

I too had a Gourment ECB. I added more air holes by simply using a drill (hole saw).

I have that same smoker. I cut the bottom out of the inside part of the charcoal basket and replaced it with an expanded metal charcoal basket. You can't get rid of the top of the stock basket cause that is what the main part of the barrell sits on. I also made a damper for the bottom air intake. It helped some, but it still is so leaky that it is dam near impossible to control the temps on a long burn. I just use it to cook chicken and I regulate the temp by the amount of coals I add. It's a pain in the azz but I keep using it cause it fits inside one of my UDS's and makes it easy to move to comps.

Dang. with the money i will have to spend moding it. I might as well build a mini UDS. But since i am building a big drum with two racks. dont see why i would need a second UDS.

I think i am going to ditch the brinkman and just stick with the UDS's. I pick up me drum tomorrow

Hang on to the ECB, you never know what you can use the parts for later on. I've been cooking with a UDS since the first of the year and love it, BUT, was at home to visit mom this weekend and she pulled out a 15 year old ECB that is in mint condition. It's now the 2nd ECB I've owned.

I had one in college and just used it as a grill, but am still excited about applying what I learned with a UDS toward learning to use the ECB. Just one of those "I want to conquer this too" bugs I get sometimes... we'll see what happens on down the road.
