Brick pit. Yeah, it's me again.

I'm trying to get this "build it yourself" brick smoke pit off of my list but it won't go away. What I need to know is if any one out there has built a brick pit and do they like it? Maby I'm better off getting the Bandera. I don't know. I just need something I can settle into. I'm hoping that some old guy like myself will pass away, leaving his Klose smoker and his wife will sell it at the yard sale this summer for fifty bucks. Hey, you never know. Could happen.

Hey, you laugh. That's just the kind of thing that happens. I'm a garage sale nut and it is only a matter of time before someones discards become my treasures. And I don't mean old trash either. I got a great gas powered chipper last year for $25, just needed to be reassembled. I don't think I'm going to find a Klose but you never know. It all begins in the mind. Think positive.

You will not be able to build a brick pit cheaper than buying a bandera. Unless you get free bricks, free mortar and free steel parts.

My idea is not to make it cheaper than an Bandera. What I was assuming (and maby I am wrong) is that a brick pit would be a more effecient burner. With smokers constructed of steel generally it is the thicker models that are more effecient because of their mass. If this theory holds true, then a brick pitt, if constructed properly, should be the ultimate smoking device. Correct me if I am wrong. I wouldn't mind paying $400 for materials if I ended up with the ultimate smoker. I'm just trying to figure out what my next smoker is going to be. Since I don't live in Texas and shipping for most smokers from there would nearly double their cost, I'm considering other options. If I could find a Bandera out here in Washington I might settle for that.

Read the whole site about Wilbur and Sidney! It lists some pros and cons and changes that could be made if building the cooker again.

Yes, the brick pit can be very efficient. It's also very permanent! You may need to get a building permit before construction. It will probably cost more than $400 - especially when you go pricing the doors, hinges, cook racks, bricks for the exterior, fire bricks for the interior, etc.

I don't know about "ultimate" cooking device but they are nice.

I seriously considered building a "wilbur" of my own, but it turned out to be cost prohibitive - at least for now. As I recall, the bill of materials called for something around 880 bricks. In my area, bricks are 50 cents a piece - so I was 440 bucks into it before I even thought abotu the rest of the parts!!

Sure is a sweet looking device though.
