Just out of curiosity, have any of you folks noticed these are harder to come by?

What I mean is, they might still be at the store, but rarely on sale.

So just thumbing through my weekly ads of both chains (Jewel/Albertsons, Meijer, and Michaels (a great meat/produce market)), I see boneless all the time on sale

Meijer has 5# bags of boneless.

Michaels has these monster boneless chicken breast, still connected in the middle. 4 breasts total, even though they are 2 doubles that need to be cut. Four pieces have a total weigh of 2+ pounds, sometimes near 3#. Farking huge.

But where the hell are the bone-in?

I tell you, there is nothing like smoked bone in chicken breasts, injected, with bone side down to protect the meat from the heat (verticals).

I crave these things, and I will find them.

Just wondering if any you "noticed" a disappearence.

2 years ago, they were on sale weekly. Seem like everyone lost the taste for the bone in, skin on chicken boobs around here.

Health freak Farks!

<edit>

And I find leg quarters all the time but the wife and kids won't eat them

I get them on a regular basis from my local chain. They come in the ever so famous "family" pack. Sometimes split, sometimes I have to do the splittin'.

The Meijer store near me has them regularly but our Jewel is hit or miss. Dominick's usually has them but I don't go there much.

I haven't bought any in a while, but I'm with you on their appropriateness for smoking. That's good stuff. Boneless have been on sale, and I've been buying them for grilling.

I'll be watching now, though.

Never bought the bone-in. I don't like bones...

I can see why there's probably less skinless stuff around, the health nazi's are running amuck on society. But that wouldn't explain the lack of bone-ins. Probably simply not enough demand for them.

Just picked up my Krogers add.... .99/lb here , but that is for kroger brand

We have them on sale around here a lot. They must be from old hens or something because they are so Farkin BIG!!!
Me? I don't buy white meat chicken unless I have to.

Thats because, like me, you don't like to dine with Sam and Ella

You got that right! :-D

I went to Jewel yesterday to grab some meat for the weekend (brats, steaks and thick pork chops) and they had bone-in chicken breasts. Of course, I wasn't looking for chicken

I agree with you about cooking with the bone in. MY grocer puts very few out in the shrink wrap section, but has them in his case. I havent asked but I would assume the health crowd wants to just grab the bone/skinless stuff and go.

Another intersting fact the butcher at my grocer told me that everything they put out (poultry) in the shrink wrap case, even thought its fresh, has to be treated with a solution (water, salt, sugars,etc.). In the case on ice is straight up chicken pieces and whole birds without solution. I thought I was asking a dumb question one day, but glad I did because I have to watch it with the sugar.

We have them for $1/lb at Albertsons this week. I'm going to cook at least one 10 pak for freezing for lunches and plan on canning around 15 jars of meat, and freezing all the broth I cook from the bones.

With no disrespect to our fearless leader, I think the missing bones from the chicken breasts is part of an overall trend. You may noticed that it is also more difficult to get beef and pork cuts bone-in.

I think this is all part of what I call "The Poobah Syndrome". A desire for our meat to less resemble the animal it came from, and be identifible just as "food".

I am of the opinion that cooking meat of any kind with the bones intact increases the flavor greatly.

And yes, if I want bone-in, skin on chicken breasts at my local supermarket, I usually have to ask for them special, or buy whole birds and dis-joint them myself.

Exactly qman,

It takes no time at all, you know what you are getting PLUS you get that extra good stuff for some stock.

Now that you found them bill, tell me how you prep and cook bone in breasts. Do you find you can cook them at 225?

I suppose people don't like spending the effort eating around a bone these days :(

Two of my local supermarkets have just ditched their fresh fish and meat (uncooked) counters and changed them to cooked meat (like Rotti Chickens etc etc) and pre-marinated meats (BBQ and Kitchen). It's a sad time. Apparently people like to buy neat small cuts of meat in plastic packets and ready meals!!
