I keep reading about the fatties which I'm going ot have to try next time.

Has anyone tried using Blue & Gold Sausage?

I suppose I should mention.... Blue & Gold Sausage is an old familiar friend in Oklahoma. Been around forever. You can only buy it from FFA and Band students. It's a big 2.5 pound stick for $5.50. Best flavored sausage. I don't want to waste even one stick if it's a known dud in the smoker. Won't be available again until next fall when school starts.

I know they're based out of OK, but I think you can get it in some of the surrounding states. Just curious if anyone has tried it.

If not, what is the best brand?

Jimmy Dean, Johnsonville, and Bob Evans are good brands.

Smaller brands (house brands, Tennesee Pride) are hit or miss.

Does Blue and Gold have a skin (casing)? If so, it might not be good. Sounds like precious cargo, so I can't advise what to do.

I got a 2# Johnsonville Breakfast patty log thawing for Sunday. It will be ready by the start of the race.

Good luck Lee

Owens is pretty good sausage too. Never heard of Blue and Gold sausage.

I live in a surrounding state and I have never heard of Blue and Gold sausage. JD is my favorite, but I am mad at them for the new 12 oz. size. I want my 1 pounders!

The Blue & Gold sausage is a FUND RAISER - you guys need to actually READ a post now and then! :D

It's like band candy -- packaged privately for organizational fund raising - in this case the Future Farmers of America - whoes colors (duh!) just happen to be Blue & Gold.

A little research would probably turn up who packages it.

Well, what do you know - the very first hit in Google:

I read the farking post.

I live in a surrounding state.

I live in a rural community.

I buy from FFA students.

I buy from band students.

I STILL HAVE NEVER HEARD OF FARKING BLUE AND GOLD FARKING SAUSAGE.

There, now I feel better. :D

Nope - no casing. It's just another breakfast sausage except that it's sold in a large stick and has wonderful flavor.

To this day I have a standing order from my 95 year old grandmother anytime a neighborhood kid (or co-worker's kid) is selling it.

My wife is a farm girl from MN and agrees that it's damn good sausage. We're gonna try at least a half stick next time - that's still 1.25 pounds...

There - don't we all feel stupid now for not doing our homework?

I guess my post sounded harsh - too farking bad!

I was just wondering as I typed if anyone on this board knows how to do an internet search? You know: Yahoo, Google, Hotbot, etc. :D Especially since the VERY FIRST hit on Google was Blue and Gold.

Whats the internet? Was it invented by Al Gore?

Mentioning FFA reminds me - if you folks want some truely superior beef, pork, poultry, rabbit, and yes even lamb!, you need to get to know the kids in FFA or 4-H.

We used to "go halves" on a swine project out in Texas. The son of some very good friends was an active 4-H member. The first year's pork was good but the second year was OUTSTANDING.

I raised beef during my 5 years in FFA and we put some in our freezer along with what I sold.

Or heck, get together with another Brethren and go to a county fair beef auction - you'll pay a lot if you go aftert he Grand Champion or Reserve but you can get some pretty nice beef from the animals that place inthe middle of the group - shoot I'd most likely not hestitate to buy the last place animal - they've been pampered and grain fed - just because the judges don't like it it doesn't mean it wouldn't 'que up great!

Looked at the website and they don't look to busy. Then did a google search and found out it isn't fall.

No it was invented by Bill In Ill-in-noise

I agree with David, I got a 750 lb black that dressed out at ~500lbs, . I open pit rosted it for my retirement party had the kid the raised it and his family over he was happy because he made money, and because over 300 people came up to him and told him he did a great job raising the beef.

I think it was his first beef I never did see him taste it...

BTW on the hoof price was about $0.39 lbs butcher cost added $50 (killing, gutting, FDA inspection)

That's what I'm talking about - the bank my dad used bought my first steer - paid me a nice price and used it for the bank's annual party. I never minded eating the beef I raised - round steak you could cut with a fork!

The smaller class 3 beeves are the one's to buy for what we do - none of it is going to be old and all of it is grain fed and finished.

Rats, now I need to check the county fair schedule around central Florida - the state fair ends this weekend so that means the county fairs will be starting up.
