I think that Black Oak for cooking would be just Jim Dandy.

On a serious note, did a google on black oak, and looks like it would be fine for smoking. May be the same thing as red. Might have a stronger smell.

I'm going down to my record stash and find BOA Live. Need to hear: Hot Rod.

Hmmm... Richie's gift box of Red Oak.....

I had that box for like a year Richie

Heheheheheh.....is this a subtle way of saying you need some more? I practically live in a farking forest now. And currently have a pile of Hickory and Red/White Oak seasoning. Both trees fell over last summer and I've just now cut them up. I sent you a pic of the White Oak laying down, remember? Farking huge tree. Hickory = smoking wood.....Red Oak = firewood

PooBah,
Black Oak is just one of about a Jillion Oak varieties.
It will flavor up similar to what we call "Red Oak"--full flavor and robust!
Get what you can while you can!

Where I grew up in Virginia, we had alot of the different oaks growing side by side, White, Red, Black and Scrub OAKs(more like a bush and grew on the mountain tops there).

The color is what the Oak tree's bark looks like and the acorns and leaves are all about the same. I remember my Dad sayiong Black Oak was the hardest to split, so it should have a lot of BTUs. Never have had any to smoke with.

and leaves are all about the same.
Can't agree with you there Big Al, red oaks have deeply split clefts in the leaves more similar in appearance to a maple leaf. White oak leaves are more rounded and look a bit like a 3 fingered mitten.

Was gonna post some links I have bookmarked but they're no good anymore  , sorry!!

OK, I'll Leaf that alone.

"about the same" = they are all green in the summer and turn colors in the "fall" and drop off some time before spring. :D kid memories :!:

Black Oak has a dark bark and almost white wood with dark streaks from what I remember. Red Oak has redish colored wood and splits like a dream. Ive never smoked with it. Sorry wish I could help.

Ive got a Hickory in my backyard that may be coming down soon. OOOhhh yeah. Gather it up!

I'd use it. It should be similar to the Post Oak and Black Jack Oak. Should work fine.

Well got me some oaks, some black cherry and some sugar maple. All fresh cut and still sappy. Gotta split them, alot is from the trunk, so will be renting a splitter soon. No room here, my woodpile is loaded with cherry, apple, a few different oaks and hickory. So its in storage and getting a chance to dry.

Too bad this is NOT the Woodpile.

Watch it Racer. 8) I heard of black oak before also - I'd use that before black walnut - that stuff is pungent.

Phil.....if you can get a splitter this time, go ahead and do it. Next time, while you're cutting the stuff up, try just cutting the wood into smaller sections like 8" or so. Should be able to split it with a single bit ax once it dries a little (unless it's got a bunch of knots in it). Just split it up as you need it so it doesn't end up rotting away.

If you would, do me a favor. This stuff that you KNOW is Black Oak, when you cut it or split it up, tell me if it has a smell to it. Almost like a stink. Some of the Oaks I cut and split around here actually have a stink to them. The bees and wasps love it, though. I've always thought it was Red Oak but some of them have this smell and some don't. I may be cutting up a Black Oak in disguise and not even know it.
