• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

.... any owners or personal experience out there? Saw on ebay ... new units, Seller rated 100% for 220+ xactns over 4 years. At this price range, it would have to be well reputed to gamble versus comparable Brinkmann.

Sorry if this has been beat to death earlier.

Never heard of Black Dog. Keep your Egg. All these other cookers are ok but the Green Egg is a great cooker that is used by alot of top notch Competition Cooks like Dr. BBQ and Dizzy Pigs. This other cooker is going to be alot more difficult to tend and keep at temperature. Why the sudden urge to make it more difficult on yourself?

It looks suspiciously like the smoker at Sam's Club shown in this thread.

If its the same, the Sam's price is better.

Tommy--I just gotta ask.

You bought a Dera, did one cook (if I remember correctly) and sent it back because you did not want to mess with fire control. No problem with that.
You buy a BGE and Mod it. About as low maintenance and "goof proof" as you can get.
You seem to be getting excellent results from it
Now, you post multiple threads about "High Maintenance" and "workload intensive" cookers as though you are gonna buy another one.

I guess my question to you is --"what do you want to accomplish" with a cooker??????
Do you want more capacity?
Do you want low workload?
Do you want to "experiment" ?
Or--"What"???

Define your goals and we can help you!
If you do not have a goal or a plan, we are all just spinning our wheels here.

The BGE is working well for many grilling and smoking needs. I have no plans to replace it.

I hope to add a 2nd cooker, but a raised deck and limited access (hillside home) rule out large, heavy alternatives right now.

Issues which seem most desirable, as I contiue to learn, are ... more grilling surface ... access to the firebox independent of the smoke chamber .... ability to utilize charcoal baskets.

The Black Dog 42 does not seem to be a reasonable alternative based on responses here tonight and I appreciate those responses.

Comments here made me go back and look at WORKABLE choices. Three top alternatives ... which meet all my criteria .... are either too large, too heavy, or beyond current budget .... Lang 48 Patio, Klose Backyard Chef.

ALL of Brinkmann's offerings include only their round firebox ... which does not handle a Charcoal/fire basket.

This is why I keep 'stabbing' at unknown cookers when I see one which looks like it could work. In addition to higher costs for cookers which could work, they are all in locations which require at least an additional $500. freight and crating costs. My costs to drive there are about the same.

Thanks for pushing me to 'focus' and get specific about where I'm trying to go. I will continue the search in hopes of stumbing on a solution, BUT .... it seems like I am better served to work with the excllent BGE and spend available resources on some hillside modifications to open up more room and access.

Regards,

I'm kinda thinking about fabbing up a square fire box for my offset....pretty much just for the basket. Otherwise it's doing a great job....might be something to think about.

fabbin' ... not space science, but not a strong suit for me.

Nice to get everything I want ... NOW ... but need to be realistic. A large Weber kettle, Brinkmann Grill King, or Chargriller will handle 'GRILLING' surface area needs nicely .... and keeps cost in a reasonable range.

I really want a long-term fire basket solution, but "all things in time" .....

I do a modified Minion Method burn in my Brinkmann Cimarron (round firebox) that gives me very reliable 3+ hour burn times between refuels without a basket at all.
Nothing says you can't use a basket in a round firebox, it just won't be as big as one you could put in a similar sized square firebox. The bandera firebox is too short for a basket to work properly in, but a lot of guys use them with outstanding results. Where there's a will there's a way.

For grilling, get a Weber Kettle, it's the right tool for that job and will serve as a smoker when you want/need it to.

For a lighter than heavy gage cooker with a low maint fire with greater capacity than your egg, think Spicewine, when your budget allows.

kcquer ... Cimarron is on my short list and I will revisit Minion Method details.

Weber 22 1/2 would help conserve space on my fairly small deck.

No question at all re. Spicewine smoker quality and long term desirability.

Thank-you,

I have a Brinkmann Roadmaster Deluxe (trailer unit) with a round firebox (31" in diameter) and I use a charcoal basket. Remember...all you need is a flat surface within that round firebox (it came with a charcoal grate) OR let it rest on the sides of the round firebox (ash will fall through either way.)

This almost seems like I'm making it too simple which always scares me because it usually means I have my FOOT halfway into my mouth already.

I think I've detailed how I do it in a thread somewhere. If you have questions, pm me anytime.

The one big drawback to the Cimarron, is capacity. I got mine at a real bargain price and wouldn't trade it for anything, but they're getting more expensive all the time and I think there's bigger bang for the buck to be found unless you find a bargain.
