I got a BGE a few years back mainly as a pizza over, since have discovered slow cooking/smoking and love it. I notice many on this forum use a WSM and drum type smokers. I wondering if there are any advantages to one of these? I do realize there is another forum dedicated to the BGE, but other than perhaps price and capacity, does the WSM for example have advantages?

The WSM is better if you need a cooker that you can easyly transport. Its a great cooker for a good price.

Ceramics have way better heat retention, use less charcoal and are more versatile than a water smoker. I havent had a burnt or dry meal off a BGE or Primo yet, and you also save a lot of charcoal in the long run.

I have a LBGE and have thought about building a Drum for capacity. Seems for low and Slow the economics of the drum can't be beat. Especially if you only need the capacity a few times a year.

The WSM is one killer smoker...as is the BGE. The WSM is light and can be easily transported (for competitions). The BGE is more versatile in the range of products that you can cook on it. I use my WSM's as smokers only...but I use my BGE for EVERYTHING...

well darn, thought y'all would say I had to have a drum smoker as well, was looking for a new toy :)

Thanks this all makes sense, now I'm hack to trimming up some ribs for Mommy!

I strongly agree with all the differences stated above. I think one more thing that many people get out of something like a UDS is the great satisfaction that can be had from procuring parts, designing, fabricating, decorating, tinkering with and modding their own beast. I own a gasser, weber, and 4 BGEs and I am really missing a lot of this. I have done much of what is possible with my BGEs (custom gaskets, rack systems, handles, BBQ guru etc.) but because of the endless creative possibilities with a UDS I know there will be one in my future. I just need to get my neglected project karmann ghia running first...

ya need two. a large one from a 55 gal drum and then one from a 35 gal drum. course there are the bigger drums. oh, then there is the weber mini smoker.
