• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

BGE Gaskets - Am I doing something wrong?

So I've been through two high heat gasket kits for my BGE, from bbqgaskets.com and from another I can't remember.

And they always, always start to let go at the rear of the egg. I've done the RTV and the glue backed versions with the same issues. I mean, I smoke, I grill, i bake....I get it hot. Is it just a matter of time on all gaskets, and I'm just stuck replacing them every 1-2 years, or is there a set and forget option out there?

Thanks as always!

I had the same problem, usually on high heat searing and pizza grilling. Damn gasket fell off every time. So, I made a "gasket saver" mod a few years back. Acts like a normal gasket on smoking and low heat grilling. Remove the gasket for those high heat cooks.

I use 3M Super 77 adhesive on mine, never had a problem. Also, I only put the gasket on the bottom, no need for double gaskets. Not only does it work well, it gives you a spare for later if needed.

I replaced the original gasket with a Nomex gasket adhered with 3M Super 77 which lasted a year or so. I do not cook at pizza temps and primarily smoke below 300 with an occasional chicken or turkey cook at 350.

Nomex was replaced with a Rutland gasket adhered using Permatex. We'll see how long that lasts. Been a year and so far, so good.

I'm surprised that works, typically if you add that thickness, you'd need to adjust the dome.

Dang, been 5 years already? Time flies!

Water jet the ring to the diameter of the BGE. glue the Nomex to both sides, done. Nothing much else to say except I've never replaced another gasket since I made these.

I did a similar mod a few years back and have since given-ed up on the the Rutland or Nomex gaskets and instead just make them out of Ultra Copper ...only install it the upper side of the steel ring.....they last forever and can take a beating and are very easy to replace if needed...use it on 3 eggs.

So do you have to switch back n forth when you use it, making the proper adjustment?

No, when you do a high heat bake or sear, you don't need a gasket. There is a slight gap, but you need more air to increase the heat anyway. Just have to be careful opening and closing.

Seems weird to me, but if it works for you...that's all that counts.

If you're going to run a gasket on one surface, to me, the bottom makes more sense. The top is what is gong to take the brunt of the heat, the bottom stays pretty nice.

People put too much stock in having a nice new gasket, if it doesn't leak, even with a crappy gasket...leave it alone and cook. If it starts peeling up, Super 77 it back down again.

Yep.Rip off the gaskets, clean the top and bottom from any debris, adjust your ring and cook gasketless. No gasket,no gasket worries.Been cookin neckid for years now.Gaskets are usless, just used to soften the blow when you close the egg.
