• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Best way to hook up Maverick to WSM?

I have read of various ways to use a Maverick ET-73 Redi-Chek with the WSM, but can't really tell which method is the best.

I looked at the Guru eyelets which look promising. I see where some just run the wires under the lid, but wonder why that doesn't ruin the seal? I have also seen wires sticking down thru the top vent hole. I have also seen where holes have been drilled, but that seems a bit radical.

Lastly, where do you best put the unit since there is no good place to set it and the probe wires are only around 2' long which is fairly short.?

Would those of you who have come up with a good solution be so kind as to advise me? A search produced no answers.

i run the wires through the access door for the bottom grate and under the lid for the top grate..put the probe where youu want on the grate and pop the lid down on it ..there is no seal issue
i have a small step stool i use to put the unit on

I have the guru eyelets on mine. and the only thing they are good for are measuring the temp at the grate levels. i havent been able to find a probe that is straight towards the wire to run all the way through. I normally run my under the lid. havent had any problems. I normally have a small table next to my WSM or i use the side table on my kettle for the temp probes.

I mounted handles on the side of my WSM. I hang the Maverick from one of the handlles. The smoker probe hangs through one of the top vents. The food probe goes through the side door and up to the meat. I install the WSM door upside down and thread the wire through one of the upper corners of the doorway.

Some very good ideas here. I am gonna try all of them and see what one works best for me. Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean, FD. I have the BBQGuru eyelets and my Maverick and NuTemp L shaped probes fit all the way through. You just have to stick the straight part in and then follow the bend in the probe and stick the rest in. The eyelets work great for both grate temps and meat temps. I have gotten three NuTemp probes through one eyelet easily. As far as the seal, the hole is so small to begin with, and then with wires going through it there isn't enough air space to make a difference.

Ditto, love the eyelets. Both probes go through the eyelets easily. Not sure what you are having a problem with there FD. I have one eyelet for the top and one for the bottom racks, both in the same support brace. Top one you just feed probe through the eyelet before putting top rack in and thread it up through the rack as you put it in.

I use the little wire stand attachment that clips on the back of the transmitter. Turn it upside down, clip it back on and then it becomes a hanger. I hang it on the top rim of the middle section where the lid sets. Gets warm but not hot. Been using it this way for 4 years now with no malfunctions.

Works slick as snot on a door knob.:-D

guess im just lazy.... i usually use the eyelets to measure pit temp. and run my meat probes under the lid... will have to look it over when i get home in the morning.

Here is something that I'm thinking about doing for grate level temps, using a Weber dial thermometer from a gasser or Performer, a thermo clip is a $2 part from Weber along with the thermo $10 at each grate=$24
If you wanted to get an#l about it you could get a BGE or Tel-Tru that you can calibrate. It would look great with the thermo thru the top vent mod! Look for it soon!

Welcome to the party Rusty!

I use the Guru eylets also and love them. The only probe I can't use in them is the Guru temp probe for the grate with alligator clip. I use maverick probes for meat temps when cooking more than 1 piece of meat.

Now THAT I can understand! :-D

Just ordered the Guru eyelets. Looks like it is a nice answer for the problem and if doesn't turn out that way, didn't cost all that much.

Thanks for the ideas.

They come 2 to a set. I have four eylets in both WSM's. That way I have room for 4 probes, 2 top and 2 bottom.

Question for you all that are using the Guru eyelets-Are they strong enough to put two eyelets on a leg or do you stagger them?

Brian

Two in a leg work fine--actually, great!

I must be missing something? Why would you want to put eyelets on a leg of a WSM?

From the Guru website - "The WSM Eyelets were designed to specifically fit into the grill holder"

Edit: Or did I just fall for it hook, line and sinker? LOL

Typical Brethren BS and poor english.
They replace the mounting bolts for the shelf holders--whatever they are called

Work wonderful--whatever the name!

My fault! I looked at my post and meant to say grate brackets! Sorry about the hijack. I was even scratching my head wondering why I'd want to put them in the leg! It seems I read somewhere that It was not recommended to use them on the same bracket, I had to ask.

I have one with (Thanks Kapn) and one without(for now). After using one with, I ordered enough to put three eyelets into the WSM. I can place 2 probes in each hole without a problem. I used to just place the probes in over the top grate and just set the lid down on top. There wasn't a major difference in the seal or amount of smoke that came out of the side. I've put one eyelet on the left side of the access door and two on the right side( as you look at it). The one on the left is for the internal temp probe and the twon on the right are for the meat probes.

Thanks to everyone for all the ideas.

I ended up using ZBQ's method -- Thanks Bro!

Got it all set up and it sure is a slick way to do it. Makes the Maverick look like it was made for the WSM.
