• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

What is your favorite smoker for competition. What in your opinion is the number one winning smoker on the comp trail

Arguments could be made for jambos, backwoods, and others as the "winningest pits" but the pit that is the best for competition BBQ is the one you know the most about and are the most comfortable cooking on.

I used to think there was a magic pit, rub, or sauce that would get me a call or walk but I've figured out that 95% of winning is experience and practice.

Hope this helps

225 heat is 225 degrees. The smoker has very little to do with why the same guys win competitions over and over again.

No, not neccesarsly. Different smoker types at the same temp will cook quite different and have a different result to the meat.

I agree.... Also where one smoker can struggle to keep stable at a given temperature, another can just sing along without any effort. Every smoker has it's sweet spot where it is the most efficient and produces the best product. As indicted above, knowing your smoker and where it produces the best product is more than half the battle. Practice, practice, and more practice goes hand in hand with knowing your smoker.

Down here in GBA, gravity feed Smokers currently are getting the most wins. As said above, it's more about the cook than the cooker. The smoker is a tool. Gravity feeds give you stable temps & are pretty much set it & forget it . Stickburners take more hands on work but tend to produce a more pronounced smoke flavor. Drums get the job done too.

IMHO, a gravity feed will help the new pitmaster master tenderness & timelines. Assassin, Stumps, Deep South are all top notch brands. I have a Assassin & love it.

I use Backwoods Party models for comps. I like to have two different smokers when competing. One dedicated to ribs while the other one is getting opened and closed all morning dealing with the other meats. I have a Backwoods Competitor that I could do all four categories on easily but prefer having two smokers. For comps, they hold temperature for a long time and let you get a few hours of sleep. One of the BW cookers is on its last legs, looking at the Humphrey's Pint model as a replacement.

My Hunsaker drum smoker is by far the best cooker I have ever used in a competition. I have cooked on many different types of cookers and these drums are so easy to use. Temp control is like a pellet cooker. Go to Hunsakersmokers.com and check them out.

100% agree with Bubba...check out the Hunsaker drum. I have owned and cooked on a Lang 84 Deluxe, Other offset stick burners, gravity feed smokers, pellet grills. Luckily found the Hunsanker 11 months ago, best 11 months of smoking meats of my life.

My vote for Deep South, Gateway Drums and Jambo.

No particular order (although we do cook on a Deep South)

There's no magic smoker that wins comps. It's the cook, not the cooker but If I was starting competing right now(only competing, no catering) I'd buy 4 gateway drums.

Another thing to consider is what do you get with the purchase? I have a Southern Q and one of the things that attracted me to it was the family I was adopted into. I can call or contact Scott or any of the Southern Q family and know that they are there to answer questions and help me succeed. Also, Southern Q smokers do well in Georgia which you can see just by looking at the GBC results.
