• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a thermometer? I do not have a very nice smoker nor a lot of money, but I need something to monitor the temperature of my smoker. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Dan

I have a few different electric probe style thermometers. My favorite is a Oregon Scientific remote wireless jobbie. I can carry it around on my belt and it can get updates up to 100 ft away. So when I am in side I can monitor the temp of the meat, or the cooker depending on what I have it set for. I am thinking of getting a second one so that I can monitor both the box and meat temp.

I have seen those remote wireless thermometers but I am moreso looking for one that I can permenantly mount in the cover, more of a dial thermometer. Thanks for the reply!

Prodano,
Whatever you get to mount to your pit, get one that can be calibrated. Spicewine Ironworks has reasonably priced thermos, and TelTru has good Q thermos too. Your looking at $20-40 plus shipping. Might fing one at home depot.
You know, you're only 'bout 30 miles from me.

Oh, and I reckon you best head on over to cattle call and introduce yourself properly.

I've tried many and you can't beat a Spicewine. Don't waste your time and money, get the one that works and lasts. ( no i don't work for Jay) But i do have six of his thermometers.

I second that...my Spicewine Thermometers are the Heat!!!!

I will add to the votes for Spicewine's pit thermometer; go for it.
Get some sauce too to help fill up the box.

I have one of those too.(Oregon Scientific) The problem with them though is that they only go up to 199 degs. So to monitor the temp. of your smoke chamber the receiver will start beeping when it goes over 199.
A mater of fact it will start beeping after it reaches the highest pre-set temp.
.

For mounting I don't think you can beat the value of the Spicewine. The TelTrus are good but way more expensive.

I like to keep it simple..a oven thermometer on the grate next to the food and a meat thermometer to poke in the food. About $7 each. Of course I'm thinking about buying a remote dual temp digital set up myself:-D. Never cared much about cover mounted thermometers because they don't tell me about the temp where the food is. Good though if mounted near the grate.

When mounting the thermometer make sure that the probe is long enough to get a good reading. I remember reading something about 1 1/2 inches after the indentation on the probe. (A tiny crease in the metal)..

What a coincidence...yesterday I was looking for thermometers on "Google" and up pots a link to this site. Poobah, are you still getting a discount on the "Maverick" type remotes??

Wow thanks a lot for the feedback everybody I think I might have to go with a spicewine from the sounds of it.

Good choice. Can't go wrong with 'ole Spicebag.

For those who use probe thermometers, do you check your temps in boiling water to see how accurate they are?
