Has anyone made BBQ sauce with crushed tomatoes and does it come out about the same as using ketchup or better?

a buddy of mine does but I think he uses a blender to chop them up and he grows tomatoes just for BBQ sauce . I will ask him tomorrow and holler back at you .

Ketchup ends up with a different texture than crushed tomatoes. Smooth with that corn syrup sheen. There is a ton of sugar in ketchup too, so if you want it to taste the same you would need to add extra sugar. The crushed produces a more grainy texture, which I like. You can control your sweetness better with the tomatoes.

I like the way ketchup based looks on the meat better, but usually prefer the tomato bases for taste.

I've seen some recipes all for tomato sauce or tomato puree, but never crushed tomatoes.

Bludawg did post a recipe a while back that use fire roasted tomatoes that were then pureed, but the recipe still called for ketchup.

I would say that you are either going to have to cook it down a lot or blend it when you are done if you want a good consistency in your sauce. I just use tomato sauce and it works fine.

I use tomato sauce also. This allows me to stay away from high fructose corn syrup and control the sugar better. Puree the crushed tomatoes with a food processor.
