• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Hi all, I have a bbq guru running my Backwoods Gator. It has the 10 CFM fan.
I have noticed an inconsitant temperature flucuation and I'm finding difficult to set (and forget). Does anybody know if there is a way to check temps and adjust these units?

thanks for you help

I think backwoods is a Guru dealer. Check with them, or call THe Guru 800# and talk to one of the guys in tech support. They are very helpful

Or get RichardF's number and call him, anytime.

He likes when I call at 2am

Call them direct a Guru, they are very helpful and will give suggestions of what to do and if necessary replace or recalibrate your equipment.

I thought the on-line manual had the calibration info, but I checked and couldn't find it.

Before you call Bob or Fred at Guru central ....Do you want me to scan my instructions and sent to you?? You can do a cal check/adjustments then visit with them if there is some troubleshooting involved.

Ray - are you saying your temps are fluxuating up and down, or that setting your guru at given temp does not match your BWS thermometer temp?

I use my Tel Tru in the door of my Party to give me the actual temp, then vary my Guru control dial up and down based on that. It holds very steady, but its setting isn't exactly the smoke chamber temp. If I set my Guru at 240, I'm running 225 in the smoke chamber. And I hook the roach clip to the Tel Tru stem - so it's at the same height level. If this is the problem, just go off your Tel Tru and think of the Guru control as a dial to turn temp up or down.

If the temp fluxuates without touching the dial, then I don't have a clue.

Hmmmm. Roach clip what you smokin in that smoker. roflmao I think the technical term is Alligator clip. And they are very touchy. pulled the wire out of mine at the GAB. BUT stuck it back in and wrapped the wire around the ALLIGATOR clip thingy and it still worked. At least i think it did. Plus after it got wet it started chirping like a drowned cricket and quit working for a while. Guess they dont like damp too well. guess I better get ahold a jimbob and get another thermo clip

I know it has a difference between the guru and the thermometer in the door or even my Taylor probe. It seams that it is not holding temps as good has it had. I guess it could be a problem with air getting into the cooker. I better recheck it and make sure that is not the problem.

You might want to calibrate the thermo on the door too. It is easy to get these out of calibration if you move the unit like I do for competitions. I notice that there is a big temp difference from what the actual temp in the chamber is compared to what the guru says it is. I use a digital to tell me the actual temp on the grate that I am cooking on. also there is a difference between the top rack and the bottom rack of about 25-30 degrees.

You might try the backwoods forum for answers. the site admin - woodsforum - is a guru dealer

That's fine - For 1-to-1 BBQ consults my billing rate is $500/hr, which can be deducted from the $10k retainer. Hey - Everbody else is trying to make money on Q

Thought I would give you a follow up on my Thermometers and guru.

I checked all my Thermometers, Redi-checks, Guru and anything else I had that had a tempereture setting on it. Heres what I found.

All my instant read thermometers were off 10° (those are fixed now)
My Thermopen is fine and luckily that is the one I use the most.
My Taylor #1 was right on.
My Taylor #2 was 9° under. (marked it on the unit)
My polder is 2° under (not much to worry about)
My Guru kicks on around the 212° range so I was happy with that.
Here was my problem. I have 2 remote redi-checks that I use all the time. I some how got the recievers mixed up so they were give inconsistant numbers. Fixed now and ready for my next comp.

Thanks to everybody that gave me advice.
