BBQ for lunch today

Made my detour on the way to San Antonio today. Had lunch at 1:30 at Kruez's in Lockhart. Beef shoulder, brisket, spare ribs and sausage. Side of pintos, cheddar cheese and German potatoes.

45 minutes after we left there, I pulled into Luling and stopped at City Market. Brisket, spares and sausage. Side of pintos.

Mrs Thillin was glad I made her eat at 2 places. Pics to come when i get back home this weekend.

I have never had beef shoulder. Isn't it called a clod or something? I ahve heard it's good eatin though.

I have always enjoyed kruez. However in lockheart there are two of them. Some sort of family feud. There is the new one that keeps the name kruez. The original location was renamed smitty's. Althought it is essentially the same que, I think the better product is at smitty's BY FAR. When you stop into kruez/smitty's be sure to try a smoked pork chop. This is where I found the difference in quality most striking. At smitty's they had the whole roast and just sliced you off a chop when you ordered one. Absolutely the best pork chop I have ever had. At the new location I ordered one and I got something that looked like it had sat around in the fire for awhile after it had been sliced. Still tasted good, but c'mon.

Anyways, sounds like a great trip. Every other month or so I go down to lockheart for bbq.

I know Taylor is kind of out of the way, but on your way back north look for Louie Mueller's bbq, I hear it is one of the best around. I've been wanting to take a trip up there for awhile.
