• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I have been asked to write a column on BBQ in a local publication. I would like to get some ideas from the brethren on topics that I could write about. I want this to be about real BBQ not fluff.
Thanks

Take a look at the roadmap section. Lot's of good ideas in there.

It's always nice to start with some history. Finding the right place to start is the tough job. I don't know if I would go back to that old story about the Taino, but a lot of food writers do.

Looks like an early Brethren bash.

You may want to first decide what type of articles you want to write: recipes, editorial, BBQ journalistic, reviews & coverage of BBQ "events" (what's happening in the world of BBQ), or something else. Doing some writing myself, it can be a bit schizophrenic to bounce around between different types of articles. Not only is it hard to focus as a writer, but your readers don't know what to expect from you. I say, pick a style and work it out to suit you. Pick what interests you because you want to be in it for the long haul and not a couple of articles. If recipe hunting or restaurant reviews aren't your thing, then don't focus on that.

If it were me, I'd probably want to go with a column helping backyard BBQ'ers/Grillers learn how to become better at what they do. Seems like that would have value for the reader. Maybe toss in the occasional article about a local restaurant, but would stick with equipment reviews, recipes, technique, etc.

The great advantage you have is this site. So many different ideas and styles of Que.

What ever you do set them straight on terminology. BBQ is not frying burgers and brats on the gasser in your back yard.
But that may just be my opinion

Is this a one time column, or ongoing. If ongoing start with the basics and expand from there.
You could also add a recipe of some sort at the end of each column.

You could write an article about different BBQ coming from different regions of the US. Include the meats as well as the sauces and the sides.

I think that would educate many folks on what can be considered BBQ.

[FONT=&quot]Good point about a one off or repeat article.

How many words are needed or column inches?

I would try and make it informative, funny and don't attack too many sections of the BBQ world.

A "Does and Don'ts" article would go well I think, with some clues about not boiling ribs before you cook them! Grill or BBQ would make a good article, take a cut of meat and show how to grill it and how to bbq it, show that some things suit the grill and some suit the bbq method.

A little history about the use of lower value meats and the methods invented to turn tough chewy meat into succulent friable delights.
