• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Do you need to add charcoal during middle of a smoking process.
I am thinking to open a dia. 6" (maybe 8") hole near the bottom, but on the side wall of barrel.
Cut a steel pipe of dia. 5 3/4" and length 16".
Seal both ends,
Weld a flange at one end, flange will have same curve as barrel.
cut top half of the pipe,
Add an perforated small pipe dia. 1" on bottom of the 16" pipe.
1" pipe will distribute fresh air along the big pipe
fill in charcoal in big pipe
light charcoal from far end. It will burn like snake method from one end to the other end.
The big pipe can be pull out or push in as a drawer.
the big pipe can be locked by 2 pieces of hasp
the 1" pipe can be added an air inlet valve

Benefits:
#1. add charcoal at any time
#2.snake method, avoid temp. surge at beginning, even temp., save charcoal
 
As far as the PBC basket, most people don't find they need to add coal mid-cook. BUT, the PBC typically cooks hotter than what I usually see folks cooking in a UDS. So the longest cooks don't last more than about 8-9 hrs. A full basket in the PBC will get up to about 10 hrs max. But again it runs about 300° on average.......
If you are building a UDS, I would use a bigger basket. Im sure someone will help you out.
One other thing, I don't think the snake method is a good idea in a barrel cooker, but that's just my opinion. ....
 
How big is the basket for UDS? I have cooked over 15 to 20 hours on my UDS without having to add fuel. I cook around 225 to 250, where it settles in and I use the minion method for lighting charcoal. I like that I don't have to add fuel because I didn't have to build a door in my UDS which would have made it a lot harder for me. I am not that handy with a torch, then you have to find seals, etc. just a lot more work and $.
 
I don't think you have to re-invent the wheel.
You don't add any fuel during a UDS cook.
Relatively low airflow and the mesh basket seem to be the ticket.

I also don't like to have to 'tend' the fire, you will need to add more fuel during a relatively long cook w/ your idea. If you do it ,let us know and... pics:)
 
My UDS would run 300 deg for 20+ hrs on a basket of Lump with two oak splits standin up in it. The basket was 12 tall & 17 dia. cuttin into the side will cause an air leak in a UDS( You'll never get a good seal) you will end up chasing temps and you won't be able to shut it down at the end of the cook.

and gasps fasten the flange firmly
I do not see air leakage.

How do you arrange minion method in an UDS basket
 
Fill basket with lump or briquettes and then lit some in a chimney or light the top of the basket with a torch.

IMHO, you are overthinking this like crazy. Trying to solve a problem that does not exist. You put the HOT coals (the exact # is open to debate on the NOT HOT coals and carefully meter the air that gets to the hot ones. Having to refuel during even a "long" UDS cook means you built your basket too dang small.

But good luck with your engineering exercise. (500 and one pages in the "mother off all UDS pages"- but maybe you are on to something :grin: )

What is the purpose of this pellet burner.
IMO it is for auto refill for LONG smoking.

My drawer type burner or basket can nearly reach to same purpose.
But price will be same as a typical basket, say under US$99
Even add an P.I.D. controller, extra cost is also under US$99
Total price would be HALF.
As there is not auger, nor auger motor, it will be more reliable.
Also no need 110 AVC electricity, you know the benefit.

I am inspired to make drawer type fire basket by the idea of "UDS PELLET SMOKER“

I am not reinventing wheels, but I am trying to make life easier and more interesting
