OK... so its not much of a road trip, but I was all of 5 miles from my house when I saw a new BBQ place. Its called the Bar-B-Que Shack, and they claim that they started in Fort Worth, TX. They have a pretty typical menu that includes ribs, sliced or chopped brisket, pulled pork, pulled chicken, sausage, turkey and chicken (not pulled). Sides include slaw, fried okra, sweet potato fries, baked beans and spicy pinto beans. I couldn't see their cookers, but they had several smoke stacks coming out of the kitchen area and I could smell smoke. I didn't see any wood, so I suspect that they are using either the commercial Cookshacks or FECs (or something similar)

I tried a combo that included pulled pork, brisket and two sides. For the sides, I tried the sweet potato fries and the pinto beans. The pulled pork wasn't bad. It was lightly sauced and the sauce was sweet and tangy. The pork was pulled very fine and I couldn't find any bark, but it tasted good. The brisket was a big disappointment. I had asked for sliced brisket but got chopped brisket. Once I tasted it, I knew that there was no way that anyone could have sliced that brisket. It was way overcooked and was dry. It had very little flavor. The sweet potato fries were the highlight of the meal. They were very good. The pintos, on the other hand, were the low point of the meal. They tasted like pinto that had been boiled in plain water. There was no signs of seasoning of any sort, and no flavor at all. I took two bites (the second was just to make sure that I was right) and left them alone.

I will probably go back one more time to try the ribs and to see if anything has improved. They did have a couple of cute waitresses, so it wasn't a total loss.

Oh yeah... they sell meat by the pound for $5.30/lb. that seems cheap, but I really don't have anything to compare it to.

That is pretty cheap. Most places I have been it is $8.00-9.00 a pound, but from your comments about how it tastes, no wonder why.
