WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Agriculture Department confirmed Monday the third case of mad cow in the U.S.

The department's top veterinarian said a preliminary test detected the infection in the Alabama beef cow last week. Veterinarian John Clifford said more detailed testing at a government lab in Iowa confirmed the findings.

Clifford said the animal never entered the food supply. He said it appears to have been at least 10 years old.

The first U.S. case of the disease was in a Canadian-born cow in Washington state in December 2003. The second case was a Texas-born cow detected last June.

The department is investigating where the Alabama cow was born and raised.

Oh well, our first full competitive BBQ season and beef prices will be through the roof. Just our luck.

Probably not. The price of cattle dropped today. The long term impact is not known yet, but I would expect that prices will stay depressed until they determine the history of the cow involved.

Personaly I believe the US has the safest food supply chain in the world. But if chicken little prevails and the buying public perceives "the sky is falling" then I predict beef prices to do the opposite. Public panic, less buyers, Japan says no to imports. Supply goes up, demand goes down. Beef has been artificialy high for a few years because the USDA has blocked Candadian imports. Those import restrictions are being phased out. This could possibly do serious damage to the cattle ranchers in the US though.

Just my .02

Maybe the mad cow was the result of a HBO test where the cow that now carries the pissed off cow flu chit saw a pre-empted showing of the premier of the Sapranos, and thought it had hopelessly fallen into a time warp worm hole and was transported into the livestock scene just prior to JR getting shot at the end of what the hell ever season it was that we had to wait for a farken year first to find out it was not Swellen that shot him... Hell I don't know....

I hope you are right Kevin but at the same time I don't want to see our cattle ranchers get the shaft either.

Didn't we bury ungodly amounts of cattle not too long ago for something?
Can't remember what it was. ecoli?

I agree somewhat with Kevin. If any more is found in a short period then watch prices drop though the floor. A lot of cattle farmers will get hit big time. But at the same time watch for pork and chicken prices to double as people swich from beef.

The price of beef was kept high because of the diet where people ate large amounts of beef and little else.

Law of supply and demand.

Todd: You may be on to something; its another mass media plot. Hollywood wants us to be gay commie vegans.

This is not good news. With diseases we are pretty helpless in the short-run. There is nobody to chase down or shoot. And the solution can take years to develop. Just remember what won WWI, an Asian chicken flu. It killed more people than both sides combined. Today we face the same old threats, people shooting at us, the weather blowing us away, the earth shaking us to death, and disease sneaking up behind us. About the only thing we do not have to worry about is local predators looking to make us their next meal. So pick up you guns, your antibiotics, and head for cover on high ground 'cause "life will kill ya and then you'll be dead" (Warren Zevon).

I am not real worried about it myself. This is #3 and it never made it into the food supply. I don't see wide spread panic like we saw the first 2 times happening.

I like Roland too

I'm partial to "Roland, the headless Thompson gunner".

Obviously I like "Lawyers, Guns, and Money". I am also fond of "My Shirt's Farked Up".

Somebody also told me that Phil's favorite song was "Hostage-O".
