• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Hit 2 joints in L.A. This week.

One was lucilles BBQ in Long Beach off the 605. Big menu of basic q stuff, ribs, chicken, pork. but NO BRISKET!! Tri-Tip, but no brisket. also alot of texmex and mexican. We gto the sampler of wings and rib ends. Some pulled pork hot links.

links were very good. But as far as the meats go, it seems they count on there BBQ sauce to give it the flavor cause everything came swimming in it. Couldnt taste anything but sauce. Not that it was bad stuff, it was all decent, i just prefer my q naked and I'll dip if i want. Either wayu, i'd go again.. its a decent place when your away from home. Servings were tremendous!!!. definately enough to stuff ya good.

next place was 'Back home in lahaina". Hawaiian BBQ..EXCELLENT!! on Sepulvda, just south of manhatten beach Blvd in manhatten beach on the northbound side.
Got the chicken and sliced steak and pork....Excellent stuff, appetizers were also Q'd and they were great. Portions a re big and comes with 5-6 different dipping sauces, but the meat is just seasoned, not soaked.

some of these things they served looked like sushi rolls. rice wrapped in black kelp with what i thought was Tuna. found out after eating it, it is not tuna.. but something that is considered a hawaiian delicacy. SPAM.

yup, no kidding SPAM is considered a delicacy in hawaii??? !!!!

and to think we eat that sh*t when we go camping. Either way, if you ever in manhattten beach, hunt down "back home in lahaina".

Yep, SPAM is like the Hawaiian state meat! They even have a special warehouse on Oahu in case of disaster they'd have a continuing supply until the deliveries could start again.

Sean, my former Marine son, was stationed in Hawaii for a couple of years -- he said it's truly amazing what the Hawaiians can do with SPAM. :D

That joint is one mile from where I was raised as a beach boy. Now I'm a Yankee pitbitch.

You a beach boy ? I would not have bet any peanuts on that....

<vikings on> spam spam spam spam spam <vikings off>

So, Mary, how was the spam?

Boss is taking us to Lucille's tonight. Then I'm cooking some ribs tomorrow. Wonder which will be better...

Not a big fan of Lucille's, since I learned how to cook ribs myself. But the wife does not mind it. We will go every now and then, but I like the smaller hole in the wall places better.

I am with Iceman on this one. Nothing like a 'Greasy Spoon' type joint to cure what is hurtin' ya. Though Lucille's isn't bad.

I have only been Qn for just over than two years but can tell you that we are a tough crowd when it comes to dining out for Q. I don't think I can just have a rib and enjoy it anymore. Whether it be mine or store bought...I am thinking "Is there a smoke ring? Why did they use so much sauce? Is that hickory I taste?"

Glad to see you posting again brother!

kiawe wood

My wifey and I go to Maui quite a bit, and the wood of choice there is called "kiawe", and the smell of that just drives me nuts. I even thought of smuggling some home with me. I did a google search on it, and it is closely related to mesquite:

http://www.winrock.org/forestry/factpub/FACTSH/P_pallida.html

I even found a site that wells kiawe wood chips, but it is mixed with strawberry guava. Might be worthing trying out though:

http://shop.store.yahoo.com/pineappleclub/woodchips.html

That store is no more. We now carry kiawe wood (hawaiian mesquite) as well as guava wood.

Aloha,

Greg

lucilles bbq

l agree about lucilles it seems to be overrated, and the lines are too long on sunday (I'd rather smoke my own ribs):-D

I took the wife a few ago, and did not mind it. The wait was not bad, but we walked over to the movie theater and stood in line for tickets. Seems our table was ready just after we got our tickets.

The food there is not bad, but as was already stated, 1. my ribs are better 2. you can taste the meat in my ribs 3. I like the sauce from Lucille's.

Wish they did brisket though. I have no idea of why they don't, but if I NEED BBQ, and can not cook it myself, then they are 1 of the places I will take the wife. Mista's house is a much better food deal though.
