Arkansas BBQ in NYC?

Brother Jimmy's

I just sent BQ a PM about this place to see if he had ever tried it.... what a coincidence...

Mara's looks like a Souther Comfort food / Cajun place turned part BBQ... might be worth a visit too

Cool! I go to NYC almost every month. Heading there in three weeks again. Last month I ate take out from Texas Rotisseri in the financial district. Had the sweet potato, chicken pot pie which was awesome. I have to say the best restaurant spare ribs were from Daisy May's BBQ. Blue Smoke is good, too.

I want to try Paul Kirk's place there, too. The initial reviews weren't all that great that I saw. More dings on price and atmosphere than anything. That's Manhattan for you.

Brother Jimmys - well you can read my review on my blog.

But here's the bottom line...
Will I go back? Yeah. Overall, the food was OK.. nowhere near the nirvana of well done BBQ, but not as bad as some of the other places in the city. I will be back to try the ribs and brisket. Maybe they're better.

Brother Jimmy's is a great place to go with a bunch of guys, get drunk, eat some food and oggle the waitresses
.

Here's a more recent review, also from my blog.

Brother Jimmy's BBQ
West 80th Street and Amsterdam Avenue
New York City

I was jonesing all day for some barbeque and I was working on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, so I checked out Brother Jimmy's. It's been over a year since my last visit so I thought I'd give it another try. Boy was that a mistake. I was a little apprehensive based on my last visit. I won't go into all the details that I did last time, you can read about my last visit here, Brother Jimmy and White Trash.

Today I had the lunch special, 3 spare ribs, 2 sides and a bowl of chili for $9.95. Not a bad deal in NYC. The chili came in a good size bowl, was a mix of peppers, tomato, ground beef and chunks of smoked brisket. This was pretty good, but not spicy enough and no where near as good as the chili served at Daisy May's. On the side of the chili they served a tiny ice cold corn muffin, sour cream and some chopped red onions. I added hot sauce, sour cream and onions to the chili and it was much better. (I know, you shouldn't use sour cream in chili, but it wasn't authentic to start with all the beans!)

As my very cute waitress explained, the ribs are offered three ways, "northern style - fall off the bone tender and swimming in a very sweet sauce," "southern style - served dry, and not as tender as our northern ribs," and finally "dry rubbed with 21 different spices. These ribs are extremely spicy and blows the others out of the water." She then told me I could have one of each style for my lunch, so that's what I went with.

These were some of the worst BBQ ribs I've ever had in NYC. All were overcooked. All were dried out. None were spicy. Don't waste your time with these. The fries were good, but the baked beans sucked.

As I said in my last review, "Brother Jimmy's is a great place to go with a bunch of guys, get drunk and oggle the waitresses." Just don't go there for the food.

Food at RUB is really good. Price is a bit high, but not compared to most other places. Plus, the food is worth it. Stop by, ask for Scott or Andrew. Tell them you're a serious q'er and they'll treat you right. Tell them that Matt and Robert sent you.....

Damn, being off from work and all of this food talk is making me real hungry i think im heading over to see brother Willie B today i can watch him make the food so that he doesnt spit in it

Strange - I posted this and it disappeared!

Anyone been here, yet? Friend of the family says his son loves the BBQ.

Never been there, but it's never mentioned as a BBQ restaurant in any of the food boards.

Never heard of her guys. I'm from Arkansas and I've never heard anyone describe BBQ around there as "Arkansas BBQ". There's lots of BBQ there, but not a specific influence other than Texas on the left coast and Memphis on the right and Missouri on the North and Cajun on the south. So I would be hard pressed to name any style "Arkansas BBQ"

PM'd today with David Levi of Mara's. David is a brethren and is from Pine Bluff, Ark which is close to my hometown of DeWitt. He say that Mara's is a mix of Texas and Memphis styles with a bit of Cajun on the side. If I were in the Big Apple, I would make it a point to visit.:-D

Went there last night with Mrs. BB and had the sampler platter. Here's the rundown:

Brisket: Sliced from point. Nice and tender and flavorful
Pulled Pork: Tender, flavorful.
St. Louis and BabyBacks: Tasty but fell off bone. Not a lot of texture but good.
Sausages: Something went wrong here. Had a weird flavor and texture. Maybe an off night. They were mostly hot italians and tasted like they were boiled not smoked.
Chicken: White 1/2 was tasty and moist. Rub was balanced. Not deeply smoked.
Mashed: Very good
Collard Greens: Weird - had great texture, meat, onion bits but no flavor at all. Not overcooked - still had crunch - but no real greens flavor.
Jalapeno cornbread: Very good. Nice golden-brown outside, great flavor and texture.

Sauces were nice also. Texas and Arkansas style.

I would recommend it and will return.

David and Mara were very nice and Dave chatted with us about the site, BBQ in the city, etc.

Barry-- what is an Arkansas style sauce all about.....been wondering about that recently.....

Can you describe it?
