I have read that Hackberry wood is suitable for smoking, but I see no info on whether it is GOOD. Anyone here try the stuff before? If so, what can ya tell me?

Here's why I asked, an email from freecycle:
I had a maple and a hackberry cut down Tuesday. There is approximately 10 truckloads in my front yard right now, with about 6 truckloads next week...You will need to bring your chainsaw and some help.

Looked a little for you but not coming up with any definite answer, looks like it is also called Sugarberry and does produce edible berries, a hard wood. If you have a Fireplace I would be over there getting me a truckload or two at least.

thanks, Terry - will get some for the fireplace for sure - if it'll work for the smoker, too, that would be great. Of course, the Maple will be good for cooking, so it's still a good day :)

I would mix it with another wood! Higher BTU will give you the heat and another wood for smoke flavor. Higher BTU may mean less less charcoal... My2cents...
