• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

Hi Guys
thanks for all the great help figuring out my new toy.
Here is my latest -
I want to do a pork butt low and slow (225*)
How much briquette charcoal do I need to fill the lower area with so that I don't have to refill the charcoal
I know from Baby Back Maniac that this thing can go for a LONG time
Do I fill it to the brim?
Any suggestions welcome
thanks
Mark

Anyone ?

I'm not sure Mark, just put plenty in it, what's left can be reused...

When I'm doing low and slow using the minion method for a long smoke on my WSM I first fill up the charcoal chamber about 80-90% full with unlit lump then spread about 8-9 fully lit KBB briqs on top, followed by wood chunks.

It will depend on how you play your airflow more than the amount of fuel you use. Just don't put it on too hot to start with and be patient until it comes up to the desired temp then cut the bottom dampers back about 20*F before you hit target temp.

Good Luck!

The user manual shows the suggested amount of charcoal you will need. It gives the # of briquettes as well as number of cups (that came with the grill) for certain amount of time. I think that would be a very good starting point.

On page 25 in your Weber Summut owners guide they suggest amounts of charcoal and cooking time. Pork 8 to 12 hours 2 3/4 cups. I have not done any cook over six hours yet. I just pile it all on the flame and run the gas for 8 minutes, button her up and sneak up on 225

Figure about an hour to an hour a half per pound depending on size of roast. I had 25 lbs of ribs on the other day in the WSCG and 3 1/2 scoops lasted around 7-8 hrs. between 225-250.

thanks - so what did you do?
take off the meat and the defuser plate and add more scoops of charcoal
this is what I used to have to with the Weber Kettle and what I was hoping I didn't have to with the WSCG

I wouldn't think you would ever need to add more fuel to a cook on this thing. Babyback Maniac lasted 50 hours on one load. If it were me, I would load it up 2/3 of the way and then put about 15 lit briquettes on top. I'm sure that would last at least 12 hours in that thing.

I did not have to add any. If you do you should not have to take anything off the grill. The cooking grate and diffuser plate have hinges so you can lift up the ends to add charcoal.

I don't know too many people that have that thing yet....you're our beta tester, fill'er up and let us know what happens
