• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I got my score sheets from the Lenexa BBQ today and I was reading and I look at one score on my chicken and I got a 4. I have never got a 4. In fact I dont how you can get a 4 on appearnce if you half way try. The other judges all gave me 7's and 8's. Ive attached a pic for your comment and thoughts.

This is not the best Ive done but come on a 4.

Clay, I agree, that's not a 4. A couple of comments if you don't mind. We have found two things that hurt us on chicken appearance scores. One is when pieces are not consistent in size and shape. It doesn't appear yours are. The other is when we start poking garnish in on top of the meat. I think it crosses a judge's mind that you're hiding something ugly (and sometimes we are!). You probably got unfortunate enough to find your chicken in front of a judge who had a similar thought process. OR maybe more likely, you were a "victim" of all the local celebrities, government officials and plain ol' citizens who were recruited to judge this particular contest. From what I've heard, CBJ's were few and far between.

Thats what I thought or even a six didnt bother me, because it was far under what I would consider my best.

i'd probably go 7, 6 if theres was something not obvious in the picture that the judge saw. Only thing i see questionable is that back piece on the right looks kinda wierd. its mis-sized, and ....Is that floppy skin, or blobby sauce.??. just looks like somethign aint right there, but definately not a 4.

I think i read somewhere you have to have a rib bone in the chicken box to get a 4. :)

There is no way to judge a picture accurately.
With that said--
Ya got shorted a few points, for sure
Does not look "below average" at all.

Lots of talk about "non-CBJ's" lately. I have judged with quite a few "crash course" judges in the past 6 months.
Normally they are seeing the best BBQ they have ever been exposed to. I have not seen any trend for them to score low.
I have seen a few, and I repeat a few, "experienced judges" turn up their nose if the entry did not meet their expectations or desires.
It all balances out!

Just my nickel

drop of sauce landed on the 4?

You got hosed by 3 points at least. Such is the luck or unluck of the draw. Next time you hopefully get a table that loves your chicken!!

The symetry of the back right piece doesn't fit with the other five, don't know if it could have caused a sauce spot on the lid or not....the 4 score was probably extreme, but a 6 would have been a realistic score, just my opinion, and remember we're looking at a picture......that 4 got thrown out anyway....but I understand how you feel when you have a score like that pop up on the score sheet

sauce looks a little thick in some places...we have found that using more parsley and less lettuce makes your box look a little more even...what do we know for the past few contest we have got 5's and 6's on apperance.

Like Phil said, it's definitely not a 4. My eye was drawn to the one piece in the upper right corner. Maybe that's why that judge gave you a low mark. I'd a give ya at least a 6 probably even a 7-8 depending on what it looked like set in front of me. It's hard to judge straight from a pic. Alot of nuances(sp?) escape a picture that are obvious in person.

The chicken was kust not good. I have never seen a 4 especialy on apperance. Ive ssen half ass efforts get higher scores. But hey judges are human . The misc catagory that I took second I got all 8's and 9's and one 6 on apperance. So what do you do except go the the next contest. Here the award winning trout with my wifes hand

we have gotton 4's and 5's on apperance, but at the contest before gotton 8's and 9's..It is too hard to tell. The only thing we do is if it looks good it looks good..Not much more you can do...All depends on what type of judge you get...If you are happy with your apperance don't change it. Consistency is the key....If you hit at it with one contest and not with the other who is to say change it. We got 1st at the american royal invite 2005 with chicken, in Sedalia the chicken was better and we came in 30th go figure.

The piece on the front right looks mis-sized and kinda cock-eyed to me.

Stupid question.

Do you know if this picture is EXACTLY what the judges saw when they opened it?

Perhaps it got shaken up after you turned it in.

Size is not a deal breaker. Who can find 6 exactly perfect anythings, close works for me. Only thing I see that is sorta objectionable (to me) is the thick looking sauce job. Again it's only from a picture.
4? not at all 7 for me from the picture. Who knows if it was in person.
