• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

299 for a WSM? I think not.

Today I was hunting some new wood chunks for a little Father's Day brisket cook, so I went by the little hearth & grill shop (not the name of the store) where I bought my BGE a few years ago. They are a little upscale, but I got a pretty good deal on the egg.

While I was browsing for the wood, I saw a familiar looking smoker crowded in amongst the gassers, Webers and Eggs. A Weber Smoky Mountain. Having never seen one in person, I checked it out. I was pleasantly surprised by the weight of the lid. It looked really nice and made me want to learn a new method, until I looked at the price tag. $299.99  With tax, that's almost $330.

I put the lid down gingerly as to not scratch or dent the thing, lest I have to pay for it. And then I walked out sans wood chunks. They only had the same bags of hickory & mesquite I can get at Kroger, but a couple dollars higher, so it was no big loss.

Amazon.com sells the WSM for around a hundred dollars less, with free shipping. And no sales tax. When the time comes, I know where I am not going.

Anyways, I ended up at Academy Sports & Outdoors and got a bag of pecan chunks for 4 bucks and change, tax included. Plus, I got to drool over a few nice offsets, like the Bandera.

Smart move! I bought my WSM from Amazon for $199 and free shipping.

About the BGE, never saw one except pics here on the forum. But, I got a chance to talk to a guy this afternoon at the meat market who owns a large BGE and loves it. If even half of it's true, I need one of these as my next cookin' purchase.

I was in a shop recently that was having "SALE" and the WSM was $299 less 20%! What a deal!!

Every now and then check eBay for WSM's. You can get one off there cheap from time to time. I got one for $149 last year.

I guess that old saying of Buyer Beware still applies.

I wonder how many, if any, the store sells at $299.99.

Fark! I just did a search and found one in Craigslist for $25. It looked to be in great shape. He put it on there Monday and said it was gone within 10 minutes of posting. Damn the luck...I was in court half the day and spent the other half watching my boy for my wife's b-day.

Oh well...I'll just have to keep a closer eye on CL from now on.

They still have that deal going:

I'd order a WSM through them anytime (in fact I did, twice). Fast free shipping and they are very reputable. It's worth it to just go ahead and get one new instead of wasting your time searching through overpriced used ones, imho. Unless you get a really awesome deal of course, then it might be worth the hassle.

Yeah, Westlake Ace Hardware has them for $199 everyday here in KC. I keep waiting for a sale but it never seems to happen. This fall, I'll be watching like a hawk.

I just got one on e-bay for $170 + $30 s/h. Gonna try to get it put together tomorrow (Sunday). Other folks have gotten them for a bit less up to a lot more. Good luck!
