• xenforo has sucessfully updated our forum software last night. Howevr, that has returned many templates to stock formats which MAY be missing some previous functionality. It has also fixed some boroken templates Ive taken offline. Reat assured, we are working on getting our templates back to normal, but will take a few days. Im working top down, so best bet is to stick with the default templates as I work thru them.

I have been looking on here for which rub to use on my first butt. I've read and heard a lot of good things about Killer Hog, OakRidge and Dizzy Dust. My friend swears by Dizzy Dust, I watch Killer Hogs videos by Malcom all the time and y'all speak highly of OakRidge. It would seem I need three butts. Next sale I'm buying them out and stocking my rub shelf.

I've been using Dizzy Dust (Course Grind) for years on my pork butts but it's gotten so expensive over the years that I started using other products. Lately I've been using Oakridge Secret Weapon and The Slabs "Birds and Bones". Both are great rubs and a bit cheaper than Dizzy Dust.

I like to use the same rub I use for my ribs on my butts. Pork is pork. So, if you already have a rub you use on ribs, try that.

Another thought is that since this is your first butt, why not go really simple with just some salt and pepper. Figure out what the butt tastes like naturally, and then add rub next butt to enhance the flavor.

Don't have a favorite rub. I've helped with my friends pork butt before so I know I love the flavor of the butt...Just wondering about a good rub is all.

Since there is so much meat to season on a Butt compared to Ribs I like a saltier, spicier, bolder rub on Butts than I do Ribs. I usually use my own Rubs but I have some Oakridge Secret Weapon that I used last Saturday on a 9# bone in. I also slathered the Butt with Louisiana Hot Sauce and sprinkled on some Tony Chachere's creole seasoning to kick it up a notch. Next one I do I'll probably do the same thing, but after I'm out of the Oakridge I'll go back to using my home made rub.

My suggestion is use a basic homemade rub to season your butt before cooking, in my opinion most of the ingredients in a rub get kinda lost in all that heat and smoke, so save the pricey rubs for seasoning your pork when you pull it. Those pricey little shakers will last a lot longer and you'll still get the flavor or your favorite product.

Check your local Lowes, Home Depot or Academy store if you have one. Some carry some decent rubs at a reasonable price. I have found Killer Hogs, Lambert's Sweet Swine o Mine and others at my local stores. Both that I mentioned are very good. Or like others have said make some. A lot of the famous pitmasters rub recipes are on the internet, Chris Lilly, Tuffy Stone, etc are excellent.

All are very good rubs.....

I have used many rubs over the years and have settled into Oakridge rubs because they have a lower salt and sugar content than most of the others I have tried. You can get a sampler pack delivered to your door for $4.95 https://www.oakridgebbq.com/product-tag/sample/

The sampler pack allows you to try several rubs for the cost of one rub.

You will find that selecting a rub is a matter of personal preference and taste. What one person loves another will dislike. Don't be afraid to experiment and try some new things.

Depends on the flavor profile you like. We like a little spice. I found the following recipe:

2 tablespoons paprika
1 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon celery seed
2 teaspoons of Cajun seasoning (like Slap Ya Mama), or to taste
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon cumin

One batch makes a little bit more than enough for a rack of spares.

I just ordered a sampler pack. At that price, including shipping, why not?

Make your own!!! You need to go to a food wholesale house though!!! NOT GFS!! A true wholesale house. I pay about 3.75 for a pound of Paprika. I found a basic rub on Amazingribs.com and made it my own by adding a few things. I was out one day and bought a jar of Yardbird turns out i bought what I've been making lol. Just think if those guys never tried to make their own we would have them to buy.
