Default What size hole to drill?

I'm sloooowly building a Whiskey Barrel Smoker - I just bought a thermometer on ebay - it has the normal 1/2" npt threads. I want to drill a hole in the barrel so I can thread it in as I did the 3/4" nipples in the bottom.

What size hole should I drill?

If you want to thread the wood, use a 23/32" bit. Just remember an NPT is tapered so it'll go in easy then get tighter
