Default Freezing Fish

I recently added some fish to the deep freeze and now everything smells like the ocean.
We try and keep a bag of ice around also. It tasted like fish also. It doesnt go very well with Knobcreek or margaritas.
Will adding some baking soda in the freezer prevent this?
Do i need to keep the fish in a seperate food container as in tupperware?
Any other suggestions? I guess that the fish thawed on the way home from the market.
Thanks for the help,
jon

Vacu-seal the fish. If you don't have one, put in a zip lock, add fresh clean water and force out the air and close.

For fish I either use my foodsaver or I fill the freezer bag they are in with water before freezing them so when it freezes they won't get freezer burns from the air. I have never had the problem of a fishy smell or my ice in the freezer tasting bad.

Apparently you guys are not avid ocean fishermen like me. I have a seperate freezer for my fish because even the yellow fin tuna bleeds through foodsaver bags. Definitely do not keep bait in your freezer with other foods because that will permeate everything!!!
So get three smaller freezers. One for meats and stuff. One for fish. And one for bait if you buy bait in bulk like I used to do till our salmon season took a crap this year.

I was going to recommend foodsave , but it seems that it didn't work for you. Kinda stumped to tell you the truth.

I have probably 50 to 75 ziplock bags of crappie, bream and bass filets in the freezer with everything else and never had a problem. Just make sure the fish are covered with water and the air is out of the bags. They will last for months like that.

Will using some Arm and Hammer Baking Soda help?
I guess that my wife will be happy with another freezer. :(

When you freeze the fish, freeze it totally summerged in water... ie. big fish ice cubes. Can be done in gallon freezer bags.

butts a fire ~ yep. thilln ~ yep. CaptGrumpy ~ No Yellow Fin in MO, but yep (CA Native mod).

We also freeze bulk 'fresh water' fish in washed/rinsed 1 Gal ice cream buckets. Load with fish, cover with water leaving a bit of head space for exansion and freeze. Might want to rinse off your foodsaver bags before freezing if you go that route...

Bass??? Yuck....generally my walleyes dont hit the freezer, from the lake, to the filet board to the fire!

But when I do keep a bunch, I freeze them in big bag o water - as mentioned above.

fishy knob creek bourbon is NOT good! not sure how you wrapped them before putting them in freezer. I have several freezers, one at lake erie and one here at home and never had that prob. generally, i will lay out a piece of saran wrap and put enough fillets on it for say 2 people then wrap it up tight. I put about 4 of these in a vacuum bag and seal it. never had a problem with smell or freshness. I simply take bag out of freezer, neatly cut one edge with scissors, remove a portion or portions of the fish then re-vaccum.

Its one thing with Eyes and panfish but Salmon is a lot worse.I have to get a new vac sealer but what has worked for me in the past is to lay out the fillets on either wax paper or saran wrap and freeze on a cookie sheet till firm then throw in the vac sealer.if you only have a few fillets its not so bad but a bunch of salmon fillets is a pain.Capt.grumpy and any else for that matter if you find yourself in Wisconsin and need a salmon fix get a hold of me and we will see if we can get you out on some salmon water.

How cool would that be to have a freezer full of tuna and salmon. The only thing better would be to live next to Rick and his Eggs so he could cook up some of that seared tuna!
