Cowboy Lump
SCORE!!!!! Found some Cowboy Lump at Lowes tonight. I have never used this brand of lump before. Is it used just like any other lump? What is the best way to burn it using a UDS/BDS? Sorry for the bumb question. Thanks for the help.

I would say build yourself a nice pile and top it off with some lit aka the minion method.
I hate to burst your bubble, but there are a lot of better lump options out there than cowboy. See the following link: http://www.nakedwhiz.com/lumpdatabase/lumpbag6.htm You'll find reviews of many other brands on that site as well, dig through them and figure out what lump alternatives you can purchase locally. Rub,
It's just OK. But, if you will notice, most of it is flooring scraps!!!! Have to wonder whether it was treated with something before they made charcoal out of it. I used it only when I could not find anything else. Never use it anymore. Find some Royal Oak!!! Smoke On!!!!!

I have used the Cowboy, but have not been impressed. When I need to use lump I find myself going back to B & B. It seems to work the best for me.

For years, it was all I could find.
I never had a problem with it. Wood is wood to me. Doesnt matter if it was flooring material or not. Still burns clean. Don't really get into the whole Naked Whiz thing. Okay, this lump is burning 9 degrees cooler than that brand, this one had 2 ounces more ash left over.... So what. If you need to increase temps, add more. If you got too much ash, remove some. Just like the Pellet thread, its not the equipment, its the cook. I don't look for things to blame if the food tastes like chit. It means I probably farked something up. Go with Jeremiah suggestion and pile it up and Minionize it. Edit: Just saw you said UDS, and someone just said it runs hot in theirs. Take that advice over mine

The only reason I don't like it is that it burns too fast for my egg.
If you happen to see "Best of the West" brand out there, you might want to avoid it. It is supposed to be mesquite lump, and why that makes a difference, I don't know. But it snaps, crackles and pops way too much for me, and could throw enough to light dry grass.

I find Cowboy burns to quick for slow cooks. I do, however, like to use it for grilling pit meats. It burns well and will easily light off itself when adding additional charcoal to the pit.

Smoked some ribs today at work with the Cowboy Lump. My experence with it was not to good. Burned very fast, very hot. Up side very little ash. This stuff popped, sparked and whistled at me. Set it up to burn the minion method and must not have set it up right. Before I knew it a lot of it was lit. Got the temp back down to where I wanted it, went to do a task, came back and the USD was at 390!!!!! HOLY CRAP!!!!! This stuff to me is only good to start you minion method with not to cook with. Just my nickle.

When he did it, there was nothing sticking to the steaks at all when he flipped them. So we are all in agreement Cowboy burns hot and fast (good for steak) and it also is light on ash (good for the Alton method) Has anyone seen (I know its here, gotta find the thread) or rather has anyone tried this Alton method? I'm looking at Rick, Curt, and 3I, for they are the lead candidates to experiment with this kinda thing! But hell, per Altons method of directly applying meat to coals, the best cooker might be a Smokey Joe!

The only lump worse is the Kingsford Charwood. That stuff sparks like a east side Lowrider running from the cops. Most Walmarts carry Royal Oak lump, try that.
