I've often wondered why I haven't seen a simple solution to temperature control for either a gas or charcoal grill that uses an electric heater and thermostat.

The idea would be to get to a slightly lower temperature than is desired with gas/charcoal and use the heater to regulate the temperature to the exact value required. Seems simple.

That's a solution in search of a problem. Might as well use a gas or electric smoker with chips or a smoking tube at that point, which people already do.

IMHO exact temperature control isn't necessary.
The homemade smoker at hunting camp didn't have a thermometer for the first 10 years.
Now it does & the temps when Jerry tends it range from 200F to 350F
The food tastes just as good as my WSM at home which will run 230 for hours with minimal variaction.
( Of course drinking all afternoon at camp may alter our taste buds :-o
