Blu has me paranoid after his post about losing a freezer full of meat. If anyone uses a freezer alarm please let us know which one you have and how well it works. I need to get one soon. Thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you with meat in the freezer and paranoia. I have the RT8100MAT from Thermoworks. It seems to be quite accurate in comparison to using other thermometers to compare it to. I have an upright freezer next to my fridge in the basement, the carcass twins as my wife calls them. This alarm is dual so I can use one to control both. Nice part, they are currently on sale right now for $22.

I have this...

Must be the heat killing all these older freezers. Walked in the house last Thursday afternoon and the temp alarm on our freezer was going off. It had a built-in alarm. I was able to save everything. Went to Lowe's right then and brought a new one home.

This new one (Frigidaire) does not have a alarm so I'm definitely in the market for one.
Quite the timely post, PJ!!

Thanks guys! Mine is in the garage in Texas. It is going on 10 years old. In my mind its a ticking time bomb. Hearing about everyone's going out just makes it worse.

Thanks for this thread. Mine has an issue closing when it builds up too much ice. Well it was left open 3 days I figure. Lost a lot but can't quantify it. Wife was too afraid I would blow a gasket that she took care of it. I feel bad that she did it herself but maybe she was right. lol

Mine is in the basement, it must be 30 years old.

But I am always down there (everyday) so I just keep an eye on it

Its not an efficient one, I am sure its wasting a lot of electricity but its darn reliable, not like the ones they build nowadays

we defrost it on a regular basis and at that time we go through it and get rid of anything that is too old etc

I pass my two freezers everyday and have been in the habit of keeping an eye on them. I'd hate to lose anything, especially the moose from last fall's hunt. That came to about $12.50/lb. I'd really cry if I lost the two veal racks I have stashed for a special occassion.

Pj I'd just get a failed circuit alarm. To pair with that get a cheap Taylor or something to keep at the freezer and check it once in a while.

Just getting notified for power failure is the biggy.

I also got to thinking about this, I found this on Amazon that will send text alerts (for a fee).

If you're gadget orientated this thing rocks! http://wirelesstag.net/

I have one on my garage fridge that i use for dry ageing it has temp, humidity and motion and one on my freezer that just has temp.

The part Ethernet part is $50-60 and the different sensors are $25-30

This might be the first WIFI product that I ever installed with no issues.

Can set alerts for high, low, motion and have push notifications to your smartphone app or email or text. Or if you are real paranoid all of them :)

It came this morning. Nice to be able to see my fridge is as 32 and my deep freeze is at 0 from my living room. Probably still going to check the freezer twice a day. Old habits die hard.

I use my wife as my freezer alarm. If she ever fails, I will replace her with a new model accordingly.
