wood crumbling

ive noticed as ive dug deeper into my wood stack that alot of my splits when i go to split them again dont split, they seem to crumble...anyone know what would be causing this?

It's just more dry rotted pieces of the tree...areas that have been dead and get dry.

Actually dry rotted wood is caused by a fungus.

Oh ok...I just know it dead areas on live trees that dry out.

it is pieces that are rotting and it absorbs water , I jut split some hickory and had to throw some in my burn pit and I would not smoke with it .

Yep, same here. Wouldn't smoke with it, but it will be great for the fire pit this fall after the weather cools down a bit.

I do a lot of wood cutting and splitting. I've cut into trees that seem pretty solid,
only to find they are brittle and shatter easy. I don't know the cause, but I thought
maybe insects that have eaten the pulp or cellulose out of the wood.
Just not sure.
