Lazzari Mesquite Lump?
Was at Gordons Foods yesterday and I see something new, Lazzari Mesquite Lump.
Has anyone used this? I have heard of it but never saw it in a store before. I stay away from Mesquite, so I did not buy it Is it as strong at the wood itself? Naked whiz says its got a shorter burn time, another reason I did not buy it The price was right for a big bag of it |

It is great stuff for grilling. Burns nice and hot, has the mesquite flavor though. I like all of Lazarri's products

When I tried it I found it to pop and send embers into the air like crazy while in the chimney and during cooking.
The pieces were either huge or tiny and useless and there was a ton of dust is the bag. I will not be buying it ever again. The flavor was fine but the quality was not.

I've never used Lazzari lump, but I use their briquettes for most of my cooks. I love it.

It's decent stuff. I'll probably be using it, along with Royal Oak, now that Ace has stopped carrying Wicked Good. I need to get up to the south bay, and get some Lazarri Oak.

If sparks, flying cinders and unusully large chunks of lump are a big concern for you then move on down the line.
Welcome to the world of Mesquite lump! Lazarri, Best of the West, Frontier are just a few of some that are out there and restaurants have been using them for years and there is a reason you can get 40lbs for $14. It does burn hot for grilling and yeah, it sparks when firing it up, so be forewarned. I use it in my ceramics and bust it up and sort as much as I can the same size and get great low n slow cooks out of it. I found the smaller the bag size the more unusable shake to be had.

Dave, do you sell the briquettes? I really like Lazzari briquettes and see it nowhere in the
East Bay. Those steaks look great. I like that you have hired a camera crew for all your jobs now as well.

lazzari is a good brand and the product is good. to me good lump will pop and throw off sparks till the pieces are glowing. its what wood does. i have a bag of the oak lump but havn't used it yet. got it through bevmore.
also, from what i've read, the mesquite is not that strong at all.

I have used it as it is very easy to get here in Northern California. I will just add that I dont find the mesquite to be overly strong. no more so then lump from other types of wood.

I get the 40lb bags for $14 at Cash & Carry. I just pull the larger pieces and throw them on separately as needed. It does not have as much flavor as regular mesquite. I only use it when smoking beef though. For chicken and pork I use RO and hickory chunks.
