Help me identify wood

It is definitely some sort of Oak. Which species, I have no clue. I will keep an eye out for it though.

Most likely what you have is either a "Mohr Oak" also called Scrub Oak and Shin Oak. This is indiginous to your part of Texas. Other possibility would be the Chinkapin Oak, aka the Chestnut Oak or the Rock Oak. This oak also can grow in your area. I would say that if the tree the wood came from is was more than 30 feet high, it was a Chinkapin. The Scrub Oaks don't get very tall. The bark pattern looks more like the patterns my books show for the Scrub Oak. Whatever the species, it should do well in the cooker.

From the bark, I have 2 or 3 different kinds of wood. Small long branches has more of a paper type bark. If I can't get a positive ID, it'll go to someones fireplace.
