Lightbulb WSM Rain Mod

Well I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this but I thought it was pretty cool in a pinch. I walked outside at 11:45pm Friday night to fire up the WSM. Rain... in Socal. It was coming down pretty good. I lit the chimney, let it burn awhile, loaded it into the ring of unlit in the WSM, and waited for my desired temp. By 12:15am and 220 degs I loaded 2 big butts and the rain was coming down harder. I planned to sleep and didn't want any worries. After awhile of thinking and getting drenched in the rain, I thought of this WSM rain mod using 100% Weber components - chimney on top of the WSM, 22" kettle lid on top of that, thermometer mounted underneath. It worked like a dream. I woke up to check the temparature at 3:30AM and it was farking pouring but all told the WSM chugged 12+ hours on about 10#'s of Rancher at 240-250.

Good thinking , TK! Thinking of getting me a couple of WSMs for allnighters. Trying to wait on the 22.5" coming soon.

It's been really dry here. The rain we received about 3 weeks ago was probably more than we received all year and 4th quarter 2006. Same as the one this past Fri night, excluding the rain from 3 weeks ago.

Those are some good ideas. I used to just put a patio umbrella over it or some crazy setup with a ladder and tarps.

That Albert dudes probably dead. We got 3/8" rain over the weekend. My WSM had as much as 1" in the bottom. I heard stories about how it would collect at the bottom but this was my first ever sump mod. Watch out for the diagonal rain!
