Default Red - sauce/rub expirement recommendations

Looking for guidance before some trial and error, maybe you can help shorten the learning curve.

I want my meats to have more red in the finish. The combo of sauce/rub I’m using isn’t getting it where I want it. What have people used that really bring out the red? Any go to tricks?

Killer Hogs seems to work pretty well for a red color.

Color of rub and sauce you start with will dictate your color. That and a clean fire.

Now don't be sending the boy down the crooked road just increase your chances of placing higher !! Judges do not like thick gooyee Blues Hog.
However a nice even thin coating of the stuff seems to work fine.

As brother Blanton mentioned - a clean fire is required for many reasons, including your finish color. Further more, some cookers impart more colors than others. Test and observe how the type of fuel, and the type of wood, amount of wood, and time affects your color. Hope that helps.

Rubs high in paprika help to add a red color. You can also just add some to your current mix. Triple 9 swine always gets me a great color on pork. Cherry wood will also bump up the red color some.

Ya, I was thinking I might try some achiote paste as well. It's pretty mild, it wouldn't bring much in the way of flavor. Thanks for the recommendation.

Hardcore Carnivore Red gives me awesome color and flavor. Plus blues hog with kosmos for sauce is what most guys I know are using
