Newbie - Need Help Cleaning SS Grill Grates
I have a Weber Genesis grill with SS grill grates. The grates are made of stainless steel rod, 5/16"??
I have been coating the grates with EVOO and cleaning with Easy Off Heavy Duty. I have some areas with a thin black burned on coating that I cannot seem to get off. I used Easy Off three times, with a wire brushing between times. Then soaked for two days in dish washing liquid, starting with hot water and a heavy dose of Cascade. I don't want to scrape the grates. What can I do to remove the burned on coating? The grill will to to about 650*F with all burners on. Maybe 30 minutes at 650*F? |

If it were me I would just live with it. If you really want it off, steel wool on a hot grate does wonders.

I'm not an expert here but stainless steel should be seasoned just like cast iron, so I have been told. When I need to re-season my cast iron I throw it in the oven and turn on the self-clean to burn everything off. You might want to try that if you insist on removing the black buildup. But the grates will darken anyway with use and I would switch to Canola or vegetable oil instead - much higher flashpoint, should help season those grates better.

i've read not to use steel wool on ss as it will cause it to rust. that explains some things to me. just try scrapping it off with a razor blade. it just might be a stain. no matter what, ss will not stay shiny forever.

It may just be a stain. I personally wouldn't be using easy off or any other industrial cleaner on them. Get them hot, scrub with a good brush, then lightly coat with canola or vegetable oil and they should last a long time.

Scrubbing stainless w/steel wool wont cause it to rust, i've used steel wool on stainless quite a few times and never had an issue w/it rusting. You can leave it alone or if you really want to clean them you can use steel wool or a scrubbing pad(green) to manually remove the crud. If it's real bad you can even use sand paper or a wire brush in a drill, angle grinder, or bench mounted wire wheel. It's really not detrimental in any way to have a little crud on there, hey look at the grates on smokers and grills, far from clean. We call that seasoning. I'd lean more towards the manual method for remove versus chemical if i were you.

Cook on them, scrap them off with a brass wire brush while hot, and anything left on there is seasoned goodness! Sounds like you're cleaning it a lot more than you're using it. Keep in mind, it's not dirt, it's seasoning.

Unless food is sticking to it, son't worry about it. If food is sticking, it's not done yet.

Oh man I hope you don't see my SS Grates . If you want them pristine, take them down to your local media bead blaster, (not sand blast but plastic media). They will come up brand new, however the cost of doing this after every grill will empty your wallet pretty fast.
I have used a standard wire grill brush on mine for the last five years and there has been no deterioration of the metal. It's a BBQ Grill it's meant to get dirty Cheers.

Are you sure that they are stainless and not nickel plated?

if you do a search you will find that ss does rust. worse thing to do is introduce iron, etc to its surface.
