the result is rather interesting there appears to be several thermal zones.

Starting at the bottom the rusty area seems to be the hottest area followed by the remainder of the bottom third of the drum which is black. the area above the bottom ring is a blackish green up to the area where I assume there was a cooking grate ( is the last bolt a grate support? so 3 cooking grates in all) then above the bottom bolt there is a dark green that is constant until the middle most bolt , again I assume a cooking grate. then the topmost area below the top cooking grate, is green. is this a result of the food on the cooking grate absorbing the heat at each level ?

There was no cooking going on when the temps were that high. JD just opended her up after the cook to burn down the fuel.

When I did the initial burn on my barrell I filled that baby up with kindling and small logs so all the paint was burned off. I had the whole barrell glowing red.

Looks like it's time to get out the weedburner or build a really big fire in it and get the rest of that old paint off. Don't forget to take the thermo out, it might get too hot for it. With all the colors of high-heat paint out there, be adventurous.

looks to me like you finished the cook and left the lid off. I did that with mine and it got hot enough to blacken the red top coat of paint. The base coat is 1200* paint and it held up fine. So now I do not leave the lid off after removing the meat. On my UDG I left the top portion of the drum and the lid in black with the high temp paint because grillin' will always be hotter.

I would take it down to bare metal and start over with a base coat of high temp then what ever color/s you want and never burn down the rest of the charcoal.

Not during the smoke...only after when we left the lid off and opened the vents to burn off the coals.
