Fark! Power tools and alcohol. Been there; Done that. Several times. Just not exactly the same way.

Its all fun and games till somebody gets hurt...then it is funny as hell.
I am glad I was able to keep my grip on the grinder(had it in the "locked on" position). It would of beat the chit out of me!

Can someone steer me to a weldless version of this charcoal basket. I already bought the stuff, so i dont want to go with a different version of basket...hopefully there is a weldless version of this basket out there. I cant seem to find it though. Any thoughts?

Thanks all,
JD
I just finished a weldless version myself. I used wire to attach the expanded steel to the weber charcoal grate. I also used the wire to attach both ends of the expanded metal together. Norco mentions this technique at the end of this post: http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...1&postcount=86

My wire was galvanized so I torched it with the weed burner to burn off the nasties.

Can't post any pictures right now as I am seasoning, however, once it is done I will post pictures of the basket and my new UDS!

Thanks,
Matt Weber

Default Charcoal basket

I'm right there with you, not a welder insight.

Here is the basket I made this past Saturday for my first drum.

Expanded metal bolted together and wired with copper wire to the bottom grate. The handle is 1/8" x 1 1/8" aluminum that was just waiting for a good use. The ash catcher is the top of a 30 Gal. drum and is bolted to the basket. Easy in and easy out.

Talking Keep It Up Norco....

Yep, I'm cutting up a bunch of old treated landscaping timbers into chunks tomorrow.
Should make for a good mineral addition to the meat.
I draw the line at galvanized hardware. If it isn't stainless, I don't use it.
Will build the conventional basket this time, the old school way.

JD, try this. Norco welded this one but you could use wire.
Not a problem.

Looks good from here...is there any rust in there? If so...there is no liner. Like Doc said...see if it'll scratch...if you hit bare metal real easy...there's no liner.

Just a little update.....

11 hrs and still kicking along at 200*

Approx half of a 12" x 12" x 12" basket of WallyWorlds best coal and 3 medium chunks of hickory

I've got a feeling I'm going to love this one and might even add to the stable
