Alright guys, so I picked up a couple sections of a (partially hollow) trunk from a friend yesterday. He said the tree had fell about a year ago and he’s had it just drying out since. He told me it was hickory (I’ve been looking for a local source for a while). Well I quickly found out it was in fact red oak. When splitting I noticed some spalting and other decomposition. Some pieces have good color and look normal, but when looking closely they seem more porous and weigh less than the parts I salvaged that I knew were good.
I was wondering if I could get some insight on whether this wood is any good to smoke with or not. I have no issue moving it to just the general burn pile since this will put me at an absolute overabundance of Oak anyways since I was actually wanting hickory. It’s mainly a curiosity so I know what to keep an eye out for in the future. Thanks guy!
