Ugly Drum Grill Question

What would be the recomended distance from bottom of fire grate to cooking grate?

Vertical, I'm adding some upper pegs to hold a charcoal grate for grilling.

Making the grate right now. Taking pics, I'll go ahead and cut the air intakes while I try to find out.

A Weber 22.5 is 5" from the charcoal grate to the cooking grate if I remember correctly. Let us know how it works out.

Although I have to admit I've never "Grilled" on it I purposely made my grates 5" apart on my UDS so I could conceivably "Grill" on it at some point. I might need some air intakes on the upper portion to make it work right though.

5" is what I'd go with too.

This is how I made mine...

I can use it as a grill by setting the charcoal basket on top of a disc harrow blade and then set the grill on top of that...
Basket is expanded metal six inches tall

The cooking grate sets one inch above that for grilling

Or I can set the charcoal basket on the bottom of the Drum and use the disc blade as a heat shield and the Drum as a Smoker...

Thanks guys, of course after I made my post, I got a customer and had to lay it down for the day. If my day goes according to plan tomorrow, I will finish it.

5" it is thanks guys.
N8man, thanks for the ideas, I think I have one of those blades behind my dad's barn. Good looking deli steaks.

I am making this one to do both, smoke and grill. I am making a special basket for grilling. What I have been doing, is setting the remainder of the 15 gallon drum that I made my fire basket from in the UDS and placing the ash pan and basket on top of it. It's getting to be a pain setting that messy drum in and out, and when it's out it's dripping burger grease on the patio.

Well, I didn't even think of that! Good idea.

So I was thinking that just putting 4 1" ID pipe nipples 3" from the bottom would be okay.

Will I need to put some up higher for when I use the grilling basket?

If so, how far below the basket should the intake holes be?

Here are some pics of mine.
I think part of it depends on the charcoal basket. I use the same type I have in my UDS but have the grate a bit off center (can measure if you really need me to) so that I can make the charcoal grate closer then 6" or farther then 6" from cooking grate depending on what I am cooking. I measured the distance on a Weber kettle and went from there.

As you see I have a pan that just fits inside the drum (made from a donor lid) with a ash pan so I don't know how the fire would react if the bottom intakes are used and the ash is allowed to fall to the bottom of the drum. I would be interested to know how it would work. Clean up is easy with the method I came up with.

Here is what I did. Real basic and no other drum need either. I used the charcoal basket from the drum, with an additional charcoal grate near the top, and placed a cast iron grate from a large BGE on top of the basket. This is excellent for short, REALLY high heat cooks. Have only done rib eyes this way so far.
Great char and crust on the beef. Don't forget to pour on some herb butter for added flavor and that all important crowd pleasing GIGANTIC flare up!
The cast iron grate is about 4" from the coals.

That's great ! Simplicity is king, and visually appealing. I'll be doing that

What did you use for the ash pan?

Good idea! That basket looks like it has never been in a drum though.
