Grate length for largest pigs
Hi everyone!
I'm in the "Q" for a Shirley Fab cooker for July this year. Planning on doing on-site pig cooks as well as all bbq catering in general. I know I want a 30" shirley. Here is my question, what grate LENGTH do I need for the largest pigs? Will a 60" grate do the largest hog? Or longer? (Remember I'm talking about grate length, not cooker length). Thanks so much for your help! BTW July can't come fast enough. Phil |

I'll bet him and Dark Side of the Q will get along well, I think the best one is Grills Gone Wild. Phil I wish I could help you with your question, I'm sure someone will be along soon with a good answer for you, I lot of good peeps on this board, also incase you haven't noticed it at the bottom of the page there is an excellent search engine. Looking forward to seeing your new Rig. |

A 60" grate will be a 70" cooker. The only hog I did was about 100lbs on a 50" grate. Here's how that looked -
As you can see, I had about 6 inches to spare or so.. I am told that the hogs don't get much longer than that, just beefier, so I would think a 60" grate would be just fine for any size pig. Its the same size I am ordering for my trailer, for the same reason. More details and pics here- http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/sh...d.php?t=232562

I raise show pigs and feel comfortable telling you that if you cook anything under 250, it should fit on a 60 inch grate. That is as long as you put it in the same position as Shagdog has his in, in the picture above.

I hate to hijack a thread, but since I'm constantly upgrading my "dream pit"....
If I like to cook split hogs, is a 70/30 reverse flow pit the best route to go?

I went with 30x80 for my SF to give me 70" grates to give a little margin for doing larger hogs. YMMV.
